ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University football team and head coach
Dave Walker has announced the program's 2023 schedule with the release of the Mountain East Conference slate Thursday morning.
The schedule features one non-conference game, versus Emory & Henry, and ten conference games this fall. As of now, all games are scheduled for Saturdays, however, select games could be flexed into a Thursday night slot later in the spring or early summer.
This fall will mark the first since 2017 that Concord opens the season at home.
Concord plays six home games and five away games in 2023 with the season opening at Callaghan Stadium September 2 versus Emory & Henry. The first MEC game comes September 9 at Charleston. The following week is a visit from West Virginia State to Athens. Concord travels to Wheeling September 23, and the first month of the season closes with a home game versus West Liberty.
October starts with a road game at Fairmont State before a Homecoming date in Athens versus Frostburg State October 14. The following Saturday is a contest at Glenville State before back-to-back home dates with West Virginia Wesleyan (Oct. 28) and Notre Dame (Nov. 4).
For a second straight season, the Mountain Lions close the year with a trip to UNC-Pembroke on Veterans Day.
SCHEDULE NOTES
-The 128 combined points in the Concord-Charleston game in 2022, a 68-60 Mountain Lions' win, were the most in a single game in program history.
-One of the two losses for CU came in a 10-9 defeat to Fairmont State. Concord is seeking its first win over the Fighting Falcons since 2015.
-The other loss was at West Virginia State. The Mountain Lions last defeated WVSU during the 2015 campaign as well
-November 4's matchup with Notre Dame will be the first time Concord opposes the Falcons since the 2019 season opener, a 33-10 defeat by the fourth-ranked Falcons.
-Concord has won four straight games over West Virginia Wesleyan, but those games have been decided by a total of 14 points. CU won 34-32 at WVWC last September.
-CU's 58-56 five-overtime win at UNC-Pembroke to conclude the 2022 season was the longest game in program history, and the longest game in Division II in over a decade.
