ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team was defeated in a doubleheader by UVa.-Wise, 7-3 and 8-1, Sunday afternoon in the conclusion of a non-conference series at Anderson Field.
Game 1: UVa.-Wise 7 – Concord 3
A five-run fifth inning for UVa.-Wise (8-12) was too much for Concord (4-10) to overcome.
The teams traded runs early on as a double from junior outfielder
D.J. Christian and subsequent error allowed sophomore infielder
AJ Strickland to score in the bottom of the second inning to knot the game at 1-1. The Cavaliers scored in the top of the fourth, but the Mountain Lions had an answer as Strickland scored on an RBI by sophomore infielder
Brendan Brady in the bottom half.
UVa.-Wise plated five runs in the fifth inning to open up a 7-2. CU was able to get a run back in the bottom of the fifth as junior infielder
Daniel Layne brought in graduate outfielder
Josh Adkins.
Brady and Christian both had two-hit days with Brady driving in a run.
Sophomore pitcher/infielder
MJ Hunter (0-1) was the pitcher of record as he gave up seven runs and struck out four in 4.2 innings.
Game 2: UVa.-Wise 8 – Concord 1
Concord watched the Cavaliers put together a four-run rally in the third inning which was the difference in the game.
The Mountain Lions had the first two batters reach in the fifth inning as Brady followed Christian's double with a single into center field, getting CU on the board. Down 5-1, Concord got a walk from Hunter and a single from Adkins, but was unable to extend the rally in the fifth.
Concord threatened in both the sixth and seventh innings, but could not solve the UVa.-Wise bullpen.
Seven different players accounted for the seven hits. Brady was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Christian and junior infielder
Zack Saryeldin each had a double.
Sophomore pitcher/infielder
Rylee Nicholas (0-3) allowed five runs and collected five strikeouts over 3.1 innings. Senior pitcher
Nick Sanso tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.
CU travels to nationally-ranked Wingate 3:00 p.m. Wednesday.
