Concord Sweeps Road Doubleheader at Emory & Henry, 1-0, 4-2

EMORY, Va. – The Concord University softball picked up a sweep over Emory & Henry, 1-0 and 4-2, Tuesday afternoon in a doubleheader at Wasps Field in non-conference play.

CU improves to 9-16 this season while Emory & Henry drops to 13-12.

Game 1: Concord 1 – Emory & Henry 0
Sophomore infielder Courtney Raines drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh.

With sophomore pitcher Caitlyn Bauer (1-4) dazzling in the circle, the Mountain Lions backed up Bauer in the seventh. Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Rachael Koller led off the inning with a single into right field.

Two batter later with junior outfielder Imani Campbell on third base after pinch running for Koller, Raines came through with a single into center field on an 0-2 count field plating Campbell. Campbell had gotten to third after a stolen base and ground out.

Hanging onto the 1-0 lead, CU still had to hold off Emory & Henry in the bottom of the seventh. Bauer loaded the bases, but got a strikeout, a groundout that turned into an out at home, and an infield pop up to end the game.

Concord had chances to score in the first and third as it got runners to second base each time, but was unable to convert those into runs.

Bauer had a strong showing by tying her season high of nine strikeouts. She scattered six hits and stranded nine E&H hitters on base. Bauer recorded her third career complete game shutout with Tuesday's performance.

Senior catcher/first basemen Jolie Privett was 2-for-3 with a double. Freshman infielder Lacie Lewis reached base twice with a base hit and a walk.

Game 2: Concord 4 – Emory & Henry 2
Concord scored the final four runs of the game after the Wasps plated two run in the bottom of the first inning.

It wasn't until the top of the fourth inning that Concord got on the board which was started by a single from freshman infielder Lacie Lewis. Senior infielder Sarah Thompson followed with her own single. On Thompson's base hit, an error from Emory & Henry brought Lewis all the way around from first while Thompson hustled to third. Freshman infielder Morgan Cline then hit a sac fly to right field scoring Thompson and tying the game 2-2.

In the top of the fifth the Mountain Lions looked to add more, freshman catcher Lorelai Ellerby started the inning off with a single down the left field line. After the single, Ellerby stole second base and later was advanced to third on a single by Campbell.  Back-to-back singles by Lewis and Thompson added two more runs to the CU total making it 4-2.

After the tough first inning, sophomore pitcher Nancy-Jo Roberts (5-8) settled in and put up six straight zeros. Roberts went seven innings while striking out one, and allowing six hits in the contest. Roberts finished the game by retiring 15 of the final 16 batters she faced.

Lewis ended the game with three hits, Thompson had two of her own. Cline, Lewis and Thompson accounted for the RBI.

The Mountain Lions travel to Davis & Elkins 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
