ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team went 1-1 versus Davis & Elkins Saturday afternoon in a pair of Mountain East Conference games at the CU Softball Field.
CU (10-17, 1-5 MEC) won the first game 6-0 before Davis & Elkins (8-16, 2-4 MEC) won the second, 3-1.
Game 1: Concord 6 – Davis & Elkins 0
A four-run third inning broke the game open for sophomore pitcher
Caitlyn Bauer who tossed her second straight complete-game shutout.
Bauer (2-4) retired nine of the first 10 batters she faced to keep D&E down until the Mountain Lions found their groove at the plate.
Back-to-back runners reached with one out in the third on a walk and a hit by pitch. Freshman infielder
Lacie Lewis drove in the first run of the game as her single to right field scored junior outfielder
Imani Campbell. Graduate infielder
Sarah Thompson followed with an RBI double before Lewis scored on a groundout.
Sophomore pitcher/outfielder
Rachael Koller came through with a two-out double to plate Thompson completing the rally.
The Senators got two runners aboard in the top of the fourth, but Bauer shutdown D&E the rest of the way as she allowed just two batters to reach over the final three innings.
CU added two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as Lewis doubled in freshman catcher
Lorelai Ellerby and senior catcher/first baseman
Jolie Privett.
For the game, Bauer surrendered just three hits while striking out seven over seven inning and 100 pitches.
Lewis was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Koller and Thompson each had a double and RBI.
Game 2: Davis & Elkins 3 – Concord 1
The nightcap turned into an early pitcher's dual as three of the four runs were scored in the seventh inning.
Davis & Elkins broke the stalemate with a two-out, run-scoring single in the fifth inning. And D&E notched a two-out, two-run double to extend its lead to 3-0 in the top of the seventh.
The Mountain Lions appeared as if they would piece together a significant rally in the seventh. Freshman catcher/utility
Morgan Gleason led off the inning with a double to left center field. However, D&E's second baseman made a diving play to rob Privett of a hit during the next at-bat. Gleason scored on a groundout during Campbell's plate appearance.
A two-out groundout ended the game.
Both teams had multiple scoring chances throughout as there were 15 combined runners left on base.
Freshman infielder
Morgan Cline accounted for two of the five CU hits.
Sophomore pitcher
Nancy-Jo Roberts (5-9) went five innings as she gave up one run on four hits. Koller tossed the final two innings as the duo combined for three strikeouts.
The Mountain Lions welcome West Virginia Wesleyan to the CU Softball Field for a 1:00 p.m. Sunday doubleheader.
