ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team scored all 10 runs of it runs in the final four at-bats as CU rolled to a 10-3 win over Bluefield State Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference game at Anderson Field.
Bluefield State (2-7) struck for a run in the first, and added another in the third before the Mountain Lions (4-2) got hot at the plate.
CU tied the game in the fifth inning on a pair of run-scoring singles, and assumed control of the game with a three-run sixth inning. A single from sophomore infielder
Brendan Brady drove in junior infielder
Daniel Layne before Brady and junior outfielder
D.J. Christian both scored on a base hit by graduate outfielder
Kyle Keenan.
BSU crept within 5-3 with a rally in the seventh, but the Mountain Lions responded with two more runs in the bottom with Brady at the center of the rally. With two outs, he drove a double into the right center field gap as Layne and junior infielder
Michael Dupont came around to score.
Bluefield State wasn't done, however, as it loaded the bases in the top of the eighth. With the tying run at the plate, senior pitcher
Andrew Neff came in and induced a ground ball to extinguish the rally.
Concord tacked on some more insurance in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single from junior infielder
Chris Satcher before Dupont lifted a two-run home run to left field.
Brady and Layne led a 16-hit outburst for the Mountain Lions. Layne tallied four hits and scored two times. Brady—out of the nine spot—recorded three hits and three RBI. Dupont and Satcher each had two hits and two RBI.
Freshman pitcher
Evan Hosey tossed five strong innings as he struck out eight and scattered five hits and two runs. Sophomore pitcher
Bryce Turner (1-0) earned the win in relief as he covered 1.2 innings. Neff earned his first career save by coming up with three strikeouts in his four outs.
CU welcomes Ashland to Anderson Field for the start of a three-game set 2:15 p.m. Friday.
