Concord Drops Series Opener to Ashland

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team lost 8-1 to Ashland Friday afternoon in a non-conference game at Anderson Field.

Ashland (1-0) was able to score three runs in the second inning as it jumped out to a 5-0 through four innings. It appeared, however, early on that Concord (4-3) was going to be the first to score.

After a single and stolen base by junior outfielder D.J. Christian to begin the bottom of the first, junior infielder Chris Satcher was intentionally walked with two outs bringing junior infielder Zack Saryledin to the plate. Saryeldin ripped a pitch into center field, but AU's Cam Miller was able to flag it down for the final out.

The Mountain Lions plated a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. A single from senior catcher Hunter Steel was followed by a double into left field by Christian. The next batter, graduate outfielder Josh Adkins, lifted a fly ball into center field that brought in Steel.

CU only had two runners reach base over the remaining four at-bats.

Concord was limited to six hits in the game with Christian tallying half. Steel was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Sophomore pitcher/infielder Rylee Nicholas (0-2) went five innings as he allowed five earned runs while registering four strikeouts. Fellow sophomore pitcher/infielder MJ Hunter tied his career high with three innings of relief as he recorded three strikeouts.

After a day off tomorrow for inclement weather, Concord and Ashland conclude the series with a doubleheader 12:00 p.m. Sunday.
