KEEP IT ALIVE
In Wednesday's 64-60 defeat to West Virginia Wesleyan, the Mountain Lions collected 16 offensive rebounds with freshman forward Abbie Smith grabbing half of those. The Little Hocking, Ohio tied her own single-game high for offensive rebounds. Graduate forward Alexis Phillips and junior guard Jaisah Smith each had two offensive rebounds as Concord grabbed more than 15 offensive rebounds for the eighth time this season. The eight offensive rebounds aided in Smith picking up her eighth double-double of the season with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Earlier this season, CU was held to 10 offensive rebounds versus Davis & Elkins, but averages 13.9 offensive rebounds per game which is third in the MEC. D&E grabs 13.2 offensive boards per contest, fourth in the league.

GET IT OUT
Concord recorded five blocks versus West Virginia Wesleyan as it tied for the second most blocks in a single game this winter. CU had six blocks in early January versus West Liberty. Junior guard Nakaila Gray tied a career high with two blocks that was previously established during her freshman season of 2019-20 versus Glenville State. Phillips came up with two more blocks as she now sits just five blocks away from breaking into the top 10 in program history. Additionally, A. Smith continued her pace of averaging a block per game and now has 25 swats in 25 games. The Mountain Lions had four blocks versus Davis & Elkins in a 72-59 win on January 14.

CONTROL THE CONTROLLABLES
With the other results Wednesday night from the MEC, Concord could have secured a spot in the MEC Tournament. With three games left in the conference season, the Maroon and Gray remains three games ahead of 11th place West Virginia Wesleyan—the top 10 teams make the conference postseason. Heading into Saturday, a win for CU would clinch a postseason spot regardless of outcome in the five other games. The Mountain Lions are currently in seventh place and one game ahead of Frostburg State, who they own the tiebreak over. In fact, Concord holds the tiebreaker the ninth and tenth place teams as well—Notre Dame and Davis & Elkins. The Mountain Lions would need to go 3-0 in their final three games and have sixth-place Wheeling go 0-3 to move up.

START OF SOMETHING
Concord entered the January 14 meeting with Davis & Elkins at 4-9 and 2-7 against MEC foes. The 13-point win over the Senators was the start of CU going 6-6 in its last 12 games. Despite going 5-for-14 from the floor, graduate guard Maggie Guynn finished 9-of-9 from the field and scored a season-best 22 points in the win. Including the D&E game, the Pearisburg, Virginia native is scoring an average of 14.5 points per game in the last 12 games. Gray supplied 13 points, one off her career high, and six rebounds in the game. Though she has only scored in double figures seven times in her career, Gray has tallied 10 or more points three times since January 14.

TOUGH ENVIRONMENT
Known to be a tough gym to play, Concord has won two of its last three visits to Davis & Elkins, including an 81-66 win last January. Junior guard Maddie Ratcliff and J. Smith were instrumental in last season's win as the duo combined to go 8-for-16 from the floor and scored 13 points a piece. Ratcliff tied a career high with three three-pointers and Smith grabbed a then career-high nine rebounds. Senior guard Jazz Blankenship came off the bench with 10 points in 17 minutes. CU nearly doubled up Davis & Elkins on the glass with a 49-25 rebounding edge last season on the road. Davis & Elkins hung on for a 67-65 win at home in January 2021 while Concord was three points in February 2020, 69-66.

STARTS ON DEFENSE
Concord and Davis & Elkins are two of the better defenses in the MEC, but in different ways. CU has been in the top half of the conference throughout the season in turnovers forced as it comes up with 17 turnovers per game. The Mountain Lions have the second-best rebounding margin in the MEC (+4.6). Meanwhile, the Senators have the best field-goal defense in the conference (38.0). January's game was a defensive-oriented game with both shooting at or below 35 percent. However, CU was able to outscore the Davis & Elkins 27-6 at the foul line as it went 27-for-32 at the stripe (84.4 percent). Along with Guynn's 9-of-9 showing, A. Smith hit on 6-of-7 foul shots and senior guard Ashton Funderburg was 5-for-6 at the foul line as part of her seven points and five rebounds off the bench.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
9- Turnovers by CU against West Virginia Wesleyan, a season low.

19- Combined points between Concord & D&E in the first quarter of the first meeting.

23- Turnovers forced by Concord against Davis & Elkins in January.

SCOUTING THE SENATORS
Taylor Smith is 10th in the MEC in scoring with 16 points per game, but Concord held her to seven points on 3-for-13 shooting in January. One of the top freshmen in the MEC, Ellie Wilkerson nets 14 points per game which ranks top 15 in the conference. Davis & Elkins has lost four straight games entering Saturday's contest. Right in the thick of the postseason races, D&E finishes the season with Frostburg State and West Virginia Wesleyan. The Senators have the worst free-throw percentage in the MEC (51.7).
