Concord Loses Doubleheader at Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Concord University softball team lost two games to Carson-Newman, 7-1 and 4-1, Wednesday afternoon to open the season at the Kazee-Hollifield Softball Complex.

Game 1: Carson-Newman 7 – Concord 1
Concord scored its run in the second inning, but five unanswered runs from the Eagles was the difference in the game.

C-N got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. However, the Mountain Lions came back with a run in the top of the second.

Sophomore shortstop/utility Courtney Raines reached base to the begin the inning and advanced to third on a base hit. Still with no outs in the frame, freshman first baseman/catcher Morgan Cline doubled to left field to score Raines.

Sophomore pitcher Caitlyn Bauer settled in and struck out two batters in the bottom of the second before Carson-Newman scored three times in the third.

Back-to-back one-out singles in the fifth from the Mountain Lions threatened a rally, but the Eagles were able to get out of the jam with a 5-1 lead intact.

Carson-Newman scored twice in the sixth to pad its advantage.

Junior outfielder Imani Campbell collected two hits at the bottom of the order.

Bauer (0-1) fanned three batters.

Game 2: Carson-Newman 4 – Concord 1
Again, it was the Eagles that scored four times in the first inning to force CU to chase the lead.

A leadoff single from freshman infielder Lacie Lewis, one of four hits for the Kearneysville, West Virginia native, jumpstarted a Concord rally in the third. After back-to-back flyouts, Cline came up with a double down the right field line to get Lewis home.

Lewis' doubled in the fifth, but Carson-Newman shut down the Mountain Lions the rest of the way.

Both teams finished the game with eight hits. Lewis and Cline combined for six of the eight hits.

After a tough first inning, sophomore pitcher Nancy-Jo Roberts (0-1) clamped down and put up five straight zeros in her first career start at Concord. She tallied two strikeouts.

CU welcomes Tusculum to the CU Softball Field for its home opener 12:00 p.m. February 8.
