CLOSE 'EM OUT
Concord rallied from a small six-point deficit in the second half before defeating Notre Dame, 93-83, in overtime Saturday afternoon at the Carter Center. Though sophomore forward
Ayden Ince hit a three-pointer to help force overtime, fifth-year senior forward
Jevon Laidler and sophomore guard
Kollin Tolbert were the driving forces for CU late. Laidler scored 14 of his career-high 29 points in the final three minutes of regulation and overtime, including going 8-of-8 at the foul line. Tolbert dropped in seven of his 15 points in the final eight minutes of the contest. Tolbert leads Concord in clutch-time scoring—points in the final three minutes of regulation and overtime when the score is within 10 points—with 19 points. Laidler had not had a clutch-time point this season until Saturday afternoon.
POUND THE BOARDS
Concord collected a season-high 58 rebounds against Notre Dame as it held a +17 advantage (58-41) on the glass. Included in CU's rebounding numbers were 21 offensive rebounds, also a season high. The Mountain Lions got double-doubles from sophomore forward
Rene Diop (11 points and a career-best 12 rebounds) and Laidler (29 points and a 11 rebounds) to assist in the rebounding performance. Eight of the rebounds for Diop came on the offensive end. The Dakar, Senegal native is fifth in the MEC with 2.8 offensive rebounds per game, and fourth in overall rebounds per game (7.3). CU's rebounding margin of +9.0 easily leads the MEC and ranks 16
th in Division II. Frostburg State is getting outboarded by more than five rebounds per game (-5.4).
SHARING IS CARING
In the overtime win over Notre Dame, Concord tied its season high with 14 assists—previously set against Pitt-Johnstown in the second game of the year. Senior guard
JJ Harper and Laidler led the way as both recorded a career-best five assists. Additionally, the tandem combined for just two turnovers in the contest. While Concord is 10
th in the MEC in assists per game this season (10.8), and have only assisted on 36.5 percent of its shots, Frostburg State gives up assists on 45.9 percent of its opponents' made shots this season. FSU is the only team in the conference not recording at least 10 assists per game at 9.6. Since the start of last season, Concord is 12-5 when it has at least 12 assists in a game.
BREAK OUT THE BROOMS
Concord picked up its first season sweep of Frostburg State last year since the Bobcats came into the MEC prior to the 2019-20 season with a 93-82 road win and an 81-60 home victory in February. Overall, CU has won three straight over FSU ahead of Wednesday night's clash. In last December's road win, Harper and junior forward
Amare Smith both scored 11 points as Concord shot a blistering 53.8 percent from the field. Harper netted a team-best 15 points in February's win. In two of the last five games versus FSU, the Mountain Lions have held a rebounding advantage of at least 19, including outboarding the Bobcats 46-24 on the road last season. In four career games against Frostburg State, senior guard
Jordan Wooden is averaging 11.5 points per game, including three straight double-figure games.
GUARD THE YARD
As it has been all season, the Maroon and Gray enters Wednesday night as one of the best defensive teams in the MEC. Concord is second in opponent field-goal percentage (40.2) and third in points allowed per game (72.9). The only two teams to shoot 45 percent or better on CU this season have been Charleston and West Virginia State. CU has limited six of its seven opponents to less than 35 percent from three-point range. And at its current pace, this year's Mountain Lions would be the first team in program history since 2014-15 holding opponents under 75 points per game. Â Frostburg State is only averaging 70.6 points per game, 11
th in the MEC, and is the only team not shooting better than 40 percent (38.8 percent).
HOT START
Behind the suffocating defense and work on the boards, Concord is out to its best start since a 7-0 mark in 2015-16. The previous best start through seven games in the eight-year tenure of head coach
Todd May was in 2018-19 when CU got off to a 5-2 mark. That particular team actually started 9-2 before winning 20 games. While the Mountain Lions close the calendar year at home, CU's ability to find ways to win on the road can be attributed to its success. In wins over Indiana (Pa.) and West Virginia State away from the Carter Center, the Maroon and Gray either trailed at halftime or deep into the second half. In fact, three of CU's wins this season have came when it was trailing at halftime.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
21- Offensive rebounds for Concord versus Notre Dame were the most since last season's opener against Indiana (Pa.)
22- Combined ties (11) and lead changes (11) versus Notre Dame
60- Career blocks by Laidler, moving him into ninth all-time at Concord.

SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
First-year head coach and former WVU Tech standout Zack Thomsen is in his first year at Frostburg State after a seven-year stint at SUNY Delhi. A couple of former West Virginia high school standouts highlight the newcomers for the Bobcats. Robby Williams (Charleston Catholic) transferred from Collin County Community College and is averaging 11.5 points per game while shooting a team-best 35.9 percent from three-point range. Zane McCarty (George Washington) is netting 7.4 points per game. The Bobcats' leading scorer is Chesapeake transfer JayShaun Freeman at 12.0 points per game. FSU's lone win was against West Virginia Wesleyan, 86-83, on November 21.
