Concord Gets Ready for Final Home Matches Against Charleston, Davis & Elkins

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team returns from a four-game road set to the Carter Center to host Mountain East South Division rival Charleston Friday followed by Davis & Elkins Monday with both games starting at 7:00 p.m.

DOUBLE-DIGIT DOMINANCE
Freshman outside hitter Chloe Thompson collected her 10th double-double this season against West Virginia Wesleyan on Tuesday. The Cool Ridge, W.Va. native is the first Concord player to reach double-digit double-double games in a season since Brytni Willis in 2014. Thompson has hit for double-digit kills in 15 of 27 games this season for the Mountain Lions including a 20-kill performance against Georgia College at the West Georgia Tournament earlier in the year. She recorded her career-high of 26 digs in her first collegiate game against UVa.-Wise back on August 31. Thompson falls just outside of the top 10 in the MEC with 3.11 kills per set and is second on the Mountain Lions in total kills with 292 in her freshman campaign.
 
SERVICE ACE SHOWDOWN
Friday's match will pit two of the top teams in the MEC in service aces. As a team, Charleston ranks first in the MEC and 10th nationally with 2.24 aces per set. Three Golden Eagles land in the top 10 in the conference in aces per set with junior right side Emma Shepherd (0.58), junior middle hitter Pia Selke (0.45), and freshman outside hitter Patrycja Majos (0.40). Although CU ranks seventh in the Mountain East in aces per set, freshmen setters Paige Richmond (third) and Declyn Tooze (seventh) crack the top 10. Richmond is tied for 42nd nationally with 0.52 aces per set, while Tooze averages 0.40 aces per set. As a team, Concord has served 30 aces in its last five games and has three games with double-digit aces in 2023.
 
PREVIOUS MATCHUPS
Charleston defeated CU earlier this season at the Wehrle Center, 3-0. In the match, freshman outside hitter Meg Williams led the Mountain Lions with 11 kills with a .310 hitting percentage. Richmond (17) and Tooze (10) both notched double-digit assists against the Golden Eagles. Freshman defensive specialist Allie David led the team with 11 digs and senior middle hitter Kyndra Pilant assisted on two blocks. Concord has played Davis & Elkins twice this season with both matches being 3-0 sweeps by CU. Williams and Thompson both recorded double-doubles against D&E. The Mountain Lions recorded 12 total blocks against the Senators back on October 6, their second highest mark of 2023. Concord rattled off 12 service aces between both matches against Davis & Elkins this season with Tooze accounting for six.
 
SENIOR NIGHT
Friday against Charleston, CU will honor senior middle hitter Csayjah Whitelow and senior right side Reese Turner. Whitelow has played in 62 career matches for CU tallying 154 career kills with 90 career total blocks. Whitelow tied her career-best eight kills in a game against Georgia College earlier this season. She recorded a new career-high in blocks with eight against Fairmont State October 27. Turner spent her first three seasons as a member of the Bluefield University volleyball team playing the right side and setter positions. She arrived at Concord this fall, where she has appeared in 20 games, starting in 12 of them. She has 15 kills and 27 total blocks in 2023.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
Charleston totaled nine service aces against CU earlier this season. Selke remains UC's kills leader on the season (2.67 kills per set) and ranks seventh in the MEC in hitting percentage (.296). Senior setter Maria Hernandez is 10th in the conference with 5.24 assists per set. Junior middle hitter Reagan McLean has 77 total blocks on the season and is 10th in the MEC in blocks per set (0.93). Senior outside hitter Sage Bearnson is the offensive anchor for the Golden Eagles as she comes in at 10th in the MEC in total points per set (3.56).

SCOUTING THE SENATORS
Junior middle hitter Gracjana Rozanska recorded double-digit kills against CU earlier this season. Junior libero Clara Caralt lands just outside the top 10 in the MEC averaging 3.62 digs per set. Caralt combined for 37 digs in two meetings against the Mountain Lions in 2023. Senior defensive specialist/libero Simone Daniels leads the Senators in assists and picked up 22 and 16 assists against Concord in 2023.
