Concord Scores Late to Pick Off Wheeling, 3-2

BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the final 15 minutes to collect a 3-2 win over Wheeling Wednesday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference contest at the YMCA Cline Complex.

Wheeling (0-9-1, 0-7-1 MEC) scored in the 76th minute to take its first lead of the game. However, the Mountain Lions (3-2-4, 1-2-4 MEC) wasted little time to equalize as they needed just 80 seconds to make it a 2-2 contest.

Freshman forward Ignacio Alvarez Maina scored in the run of his play as he received a pass from junior midfielder Andre Nicholson on the left side of the penalty area and deposited his second goal of the season.

In the 81st minute, junior forward Fabian Amhof scored off a set piece.

On a free kick by sophomore midfielder Tomas Kelly in the midfield, sophomore midfielder Antyon Henry headed the ball across the six-yard box to where Amhof lunged in a header to push Concord back in front.

Right after Wheeling's second goal of the game, the contest was delayed approximately 20 minutes for a CU injury.

Kelly got the scoring started as his counter attack goal put the Mountain Lions up in the 18th minute. Nicholson tallied his first of two assists on the day. Wheeling needed just three minutes to tie where the deadlock remained until the last 15 minutes.

Wheeling had a 16-12 total shots edge with both teams taking seven shots on goal.

Alvarez and Kelly each took three shots for the Maroon and Gray.

Sophomore goalkeeper Keegan Grant made five saves in the game.

The Mountain Lions have another important MEC game at home 4:15 p.m. Saturday as they welcome Frostburg State.
