BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team powered past Frostburg State, 3-0, to pick up a key Mountain East Conference win Saturday evening at the YMCA Cline Complex.
CU (4-2-4, 2-2-4 MEC) used two goals in a five-minute stretch of the first half to take command of the contest.
In the run of play in the 24
th minute, junior midfielder
Carlos Zuniga buried his first goal of the season. After Frostburg State (5-7, 2-7 MEC) was unable to clear a corner kick away from the penalty area, junior forward
Fabian Amhof slipped a pass to Zuniga who netted the goal inside the left post.
Sophomore midfielder
Tomas Kelly was responsible for the next Concord goal as he buried a free kick from 25 yards away into the upper right corner of the goal in the 29
th minute. It was his fourth goal of the season.
The Mountain Lions added an insurance goal in the 56
th minute.
Kelly was able to halt an attack by the Bobcats and cleared the ball into the Frostburg State defensive half. After junior midfielder
Elvis Gomez possessed the ball, he sent a pass to fellow junior midfielder
Andre Nicholson who waited to Kelly to make the run towards goal. Kelly quickly touched to Amhof on the left flank, and Amhof put away his team-best six goal of the year.
Concord owned a 14-10 advantage in shots with six on target to Frostburg State's four.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Keegan Grant made four saves in the contest to preserve his fourth shutout of the season.
Kelly led all players with five shots. Amhof added four.
The Mountain Lions step out of MEC play for a contest at Salem 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
