BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie against Notre Dame Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference contest at the YMCA Cline Complex.
The Mountain Lions (7-3-7, 4-2-7 MEC) overcame a 1-0 deficit after Notre Dame (11-2-4, 8-2-4 MEC) scored in the 26
th minute in the run of play.
In the 75
th minute, freshman forward
Ignacio Alvarez Maina was taken down in the penalty box and drew a foul on the Notre Dame back line. Sophomore midfielder
Tomas Kelly stepped up and buried his second penalty of the season, and his sixth overall goal of the fall.
CU still needed to survive a surge from the Falcons over the final 15 minutes. Sophomore goalkeeper
Keegan Grant made four of his seven saves for the game in the final 15 minutes, including scrambling for back-to-back saves just seven seconds apart in the 89
th minute.
Concord was held to seven shots in the game with four attempts in the first half. Junior forward
Fabian Amhof fired off two shots on goal in the first half. Alvarez nearly had an equalizer out of the halftime break as he fired a shot high in the 48
th minute.
The draw for the Mountain Lions, coupled with a West Virginia Wesleyan tie versus West Liberty, keeps them in the top four of the MEC standings going into the final play date of the season on Wednesday. The third and fourth seeds in the MEC Tournament will host a home game November 5.
Alvarez, Kelly and Amhof accounted for six of the seven shots for CU.
NDC took 16 shots for the game, and had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Concord visits nationally-ranked, third-rated Charleston 7:00 p.m. Wednesday in the regular-season finale.
