Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Concord Falls to Nationally-Ranked Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team fell to nationally-ranked, third-rated Charleston, 5-0, Wednesday night in a Mountain East Conference game at Segra Field at the Welch Athletic Complex.

The Mountain Lions (7-4-7, 4-3-7 MEC) will advance to the Mountain East Conference Tournament, hosting West Virginia Wesleyan in the quarterfinal round Sunday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at the YMCA Cline Complex in Beckley, West Virginia. CU will be the four seed while WVWC is the five seed.

CU will host its first conference tournament game in program history, and it will be the first conference tournament appearance for the Maroon and Gray in 23 years.

On Wednesday, Charleston (16-1, 13-1 MEC) scored in the first 10 minutes to open the scoring. It appeared the Golden Eagles would double their lead in the 26th minute after a CU handball in the penalty box off a corner kick. However, sophomore goalkeeper Keegan Grant stepped up and made one of his eight saves to keep the game a one-goal deficit.
Charleston scored four times after halftime.

Concord took six shots in the game with sophomore midfielder Tomas Kelly accounting for two shots on goal. Kelly had a chance to equalize in the 34th minute, but was turned away.

Sophomore defender Kai Forsyth and freshman midfielder Luca Sampellegrini both had a shot on goal.

All MEC Tournament information will be released Thursday.
