Concord Comes Up Short at Tusculum

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The Concord University men's soccer team lost 2-1 to Tusculum Wednesday night in the final non-conference game of the season at Pioneer Field.

Concord (7-3-6) got a second-half goal from junior midfielder Elvis Gomez, but it wasn't quite enough as Tusculum had a quick response to edge the Mountain Lions.

Down 1-0, Gomez took a pass from junior midfielder Alessandro Raffl in the 58th minute and buried his third goal of the season, and his second tally in the last three games. However, the Pioneers (8-4-3) responded with a goal just six minutes later to regain their one-goal advantage.

CU was forced to chase the lead throughout in the first 45 minutes as Tusculum scored in the third minute.

Offense and chances at the goal were limited in the first half with just eight total shots—four for each team.

However, down the stretch of the game Concord stressed the Tusculum defense with back-to-back shots from sophomore defender Kai Forsyth in the 77th minute, including the first opportunity being cleared off the goal line by the TU defense.

Forsyth cranked a shot towards goal in the 81st minute that sailed over the crossbar. The surge from CU kept coming as Forsyth had a shot saved in the 82nd minute, and less than 50 seconds later junior forward Fabian Amhof hit the crossbar.

The final chance for the Maroon and Gray came from junior midfielder Andre Nicholson right as the final buzzer sounded, but the shot was high of the goal.

With the late offensive push, CU outshot the Pioneers 12-11 with half of those shots on target.

Forsyth led Concord with four shots while Nicholson and Raffl each tallied two shots. Concord took four of the game's five corner kicks.

Sophomore goalkeeper Keegan Grant made two saves.

The Mountain Lions host Notre Dame 1:00 p.m. Sunday in the final regular-season home game of the season.
