Concord Defeated by Frostburg State in Homecoming Game

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University football team dropped a 34-3 decision to Frostburg State Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at Callaghan Stadium on Homecoming.

The Mountain Lions (0-7, 0-6 MEC) scored on their opening drive as CU cashed in on a 23-yard field goal from freshman kicker Connor Mollohan. Concord drove a short field—48 yards over 11 plays—after stuffing Frostburg State (5-1, 4-1 MEC) at midfield on the first possession of the contest on fourth down.

Defensively, Concord continued to stand tall as it forced a Frostburg State punt on the ensuing possession after just one first down, and junior defensive back Mekhi Williams intercepted his second pass of the season just across midfield at the 1:57 mark of the first quarter.

However, the Mountain Lions were unable to take advantage as FSU scored twice in the second quarter to open up a 10-3 advantage with 1:26 remaining until halftime.

A quick three-and-out from CU resulted in a punt, but junior defensive lineman Delando Morris forced a fumble as junior defensive back Trevis Dampier pounced on the loose ball at the Frostburg State 18-yard line. However, the Bobcats' defense was able to keep Concord off the board despite the short field.

FSU kicked a field goal and used a 30-yard drive to extend the lead to 20-3 on the first two drives of the third quarter en route to the victory.

Sixth-year wide receiver Kris Copeland caught seven passes for 107 yards to pace Concord offensively. Senior quarterback Jack Mangel sprayed around 17 completions to six different receivers as he finished the day with 178 yards.

Graduate defensive lineman Vonte Pannell tallied a career-best nine tackles while adding a 0.5 tackle for loss. Freshman defensive back Kendall Bournes netted eight stops—all solo—while freshman linebacker Brodee Rice matched Bournes in tackles. Both players also added a tackle for loss.

Saturday was the first time this season that CU had multiple takeaways in a game.

The Mountain Lions travel to Glenville State 1:00 p.m. October 28.
