MILESTONE MOMENT
With a three-pointer late in the defeat at Charleston Wednesday night, senior guard Ethan Heller eclipsed 1,000 points in his career, becoming the 41st player in program history to reach the milestone. Heller is the third player in the seven-year tenure of head coach Todd May to score 1,000 points. Heller has been hot from three-point distance recently as he has hit two or more three-pointers in six straight games, and is shooting 51.6 percent (16-for-31) from three-point range in that span. The Thornville, Ohio native is eight triples away from breaking into the top 10 in program history. He currently has 167. Meanwhile, graduate guard Lual Daniel Rahama is 26 points from 1,000 for his career between his time at Virginia State before coming to CU prior to last year.

EFFICIENT EVENING
In the losing effort at Charleston, the Mountain Lions shot 49.3 percent from the floor—the fifth-highest shooting percentage from the field this season for CU. Senior forward Jevon Laidler had his best shooting night of the season as he made 6-of-8 shots on his way to a team-best 18 points. After shooting 4-for-15 from the field in the two previous games, sophomore forward Amare Smith bounced to make six of his eight attempts, scoring 14 points. Rahama was 5-for-8 from the floor in posting 10 points and just missing his seventh double-double of the season with nine rebounds.  The Mountain Lions are 6-3 this season when shooting 45 percent or better from the floor, but two of the losses are to Charleston.

THE TREND CONTINUES
Three games ago, Concord was 14-for-29 at the foul line which was the last of three games shooting less than 70 percent at the charity stripe. However, the Mountain Lions have reversed their fortunes at the free-throw line with just eight misses at the foul line (48-for-56/85.7 percent) in the last three games. CU was 8-for-11 at the foul line at Charleston after having back-to-back with 20 or more makes at the foul line. Smith is 14-for-14 on free throws in the last three games, and has only missed three foul shots all year (35-for-38/92.1 percent). Junior guard JJ Harper is ninth in the MEC in free throws shooting (80 percent/48-of-60). Rahama made 12 of his 13 attempts at Salem—the most made free throws in a game for a Concord player since Matt Weir hit 12 at home against West Liberty last season.

BREAK OUT THE BROOMS
The Maroon and Gray swept two regular-season games from Glenville State last season for the first time since the 2018-19 campaign. Because of Covid protocol, CU was reduced to seven players in an 86-82 home win over the Pioneers. Laidler poured in a career-best 25 points on 9-for-13 shooting. He added eight rebounds. Senior guard Cade Fix came off the bench to score 12 points, all on three-pointers. Smith had 11 points on 5-for-7 shooting in what was his second career start. Smith was crucial in a 90-80 victory to end the regular season as he posted a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Junior guard Jordan Wooden hit for 13 points on 6-for-9 shooting. Heller and Rahama notched 12 points apiece. Concord shot over 50 percent in both games.

GET BACK ON D
Both CU and GSU are averaging better than 80 points per game. The Pioneers are 10th in Division II with 89.1 points per game. Meanwhile, Concord is 36th nationally with 80.9 points per contest. However, both teams are among some of the best defensive squads in the conference. Glenville State is one of five teams in the MEC holding teams under 80 points, and is 8-1 when limiting teams under 80 this year. Concord is tied for second in the MEC in field-goal defense, locking down teams to 42.6 percent from the floor. After giving up 46.8 percent shooting in last year's home win, the Mountain Lions held GSU to 40 percent shooting in its own gym. CU has given up 50 percent shooting in back-to-back games, but had gone nine of 10 games giving up less than 45 percent before Monday.

CAN'T STOP EM ALL
Concord and Glenville State are two of the most balanced teams in the conference. The Mountain Lions have no one ranked in the top 10 in scoring—Rahama checks in 11th with 16.0 points per game. However, CU has five players averaging at least 8.5 points per game. A seventh, fifth-year senior forward Da'Vion Moore, is scoring 6.4 points per game. Jordan Smith is GSU's leading scorer at 18.4, good enough for seventh in the league. Head coach Justin Caldwell has six players scoring at least seven points per game. GSU's Smith had a 33-point explosion earlier this season versus Alderson Broaddus.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
25-15- Rahama's 26 points and 16 rebounds at Salem Monday was the first 25-15 game for CU since Terry Hopewell at Shepherd January 2016.

25- Heller's next game with three three-pointers will be his 25th career contest with three triples.

661- Points scored by Rahama at Concord as part of his 974 career points.

SCOUTING THE PIONEERS
Glenville State is fresh off a win over nationally-ranked, 13th-rated West Virginia State, 91-77, where it led by as much as 25 points. Freddie Word had a triple-double of 22 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists in the upset win. The Pioneers are 11-2 in their last 13 home games, but one of the losses is to Concord last February. Caldwell, a southern West Virginia native of Wyoming County, can get back to .500 for his career at GSU with a win, currently sitting at 57-58 in his fifth year. Word averages 15.1 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game.
