Concord Comes Up Short at Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team dropped an 80-68 game to Charleston Wednesday night in a Mountain East Conference game at the Wehrle Center.

Down five at halftime, 41-36, CU (5-11, 3-8 MEC) was unable to respond to a third-quarter run from the Golden Eagles (14-3, 9-2 MEC). Still within striking distance of Charleston, the Mountain Lions watched UC go on a 12-2 run over the next 3:21 of the quarter to take a 63-46 advantage with 1:36 remaining in third.

Trailing 68-52, CU hit back-to-back three-pointers—from graduate guard Maggie Guynn and junior guard Jaisah Smith—to get within 10 at the 6:02 mark of the fourth quarter. The Mountain Lions trimmed the deficit to 10 points once more, 72-62, after two free throws from Guynn, but it was as close as the Maroon and Gray would get.

Concord came out blistering hot from the field as it sank eight of its 12 shots in the first quarter, but still trailed 24-22 after 10 minutes. Guynn scored nine of 19 points in the first quarter—all on three-pointers.

The Mountain Lions kept the consistent shooting up in the second quarter as it made 50 percent of its attempts (6-for-12). However, 14 turnovers in the first half made Concord chase the lead throughout the second quarter as it trailed by five at halftime.

Joining Guynn in double figures were J. Smith who netted 15 points along with freshman forward Abbie Smith who added 14 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Nakaila Gray notched eight points and four steals.

Guynn hit five three-pointers in the game, a career high, and went over 150 career triples in the first quarter—becoming the seventh player in program history to do so.

Concord shot 51.1 percent (24-for-47) from the floor, but committed 24 turnovers.

CU stays on the road to play at top-three, nationally-ranked Glenville State 2:00 p.m. Saturday
