ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team made a third-quarter push, but was unable to erase a double-digit halftime deficit in a 71-55 loss to UVa.-Wise Monday afternoon in a non-conference contest at the Carter Center.
Trailing 35-21 at intermission, after the Cavaliers (12-6) beat the halftime buzzer with a three-pointer, Concord (5-10) saw the margin go up to 18 points as UVa.-Wise scored the first four points of the third quarter. However, the Mountain Lions rattled off a 12-1 run over the next four minutes to get within 40-33 at the 5:03 mark of the period.
Wise responded with back-to-back buckets, but a jumper from graduate guard
Maggie Guynn, and an offensive putback from junior guard
Jaisah Smith trimmed the Cavaliers' lead to five points, 42-37. UVa.-Wise stemmed the tide with the eight straight points. The Mountain Lions were able to take back some momentum as freshman guard
Hannah Perdue's 35-foot three-pointer at the third-quarter horn got CU within 50-40.
The 10-point deficit was as close as Concord would get for the remainder of the contest.
UVa.-Wise used an 11-2 run over the final five minutes of the first quarter to gain separation for the Mountain Lions.

Abbie Smith each netted 10 points. Smith went for seven rebounds while Gray added six boards. Guynn scored eight points and Smith tallied seven points and two steals.
Concord starts a three-game road trip 5:30 p.m. Wednesday against nationally-ranked Charleston in a Mountain East Conference clash.
