ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team put the clamps on Davis & Elkins in a 72-59 win Saturday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference game at the Carter Center.
After a slow start, the Mountain Lions (5-9, 3-7 MEC) found their footing late in the first quarter. Trailing 7-4 at the 2:50 mark of the period, Concord held the Senators (3-11, 3-7 MEC) to one point over the next 7:22 of the contest as it opened up a 22-8 lead after a layup from junior guard
Nakaila Gray.
CU continued to stymy Davis & Elkins over the final six minutes of the quarter as it took a 33-16 halftime lead as senior guard
Ashton Funderburg accounted for five straight points.
Out of the locker room, the Mountain Lions watched D&E trim the lead to 12 points, but Concord answered with an 8-2 run, including one of three three-pointers from graduate guard
Maggie Guynn at the 5:48 mark of the third quarter to stretch the lead back to 18 points, 44-26.
Concord kept Davis & Elkins held down, and led by as much as 24 points early in the fourth quarter. The Senators, however, went on a run to get within 12 again, 64-52. Guynn was able to stop the momentum as she finished off a three-point play with 2:33 remaining to help the Mountain Lions to a 13-point victory.

The Maroon and Gray shot 84.4 percent (27-for-32) at the foul line, led by Guynn's perfect day and a 6-for-7 showing by Smith.
