HOT SHOTS
Concord sank 10 three-pointers in a come-from-behind win over West Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday night on the road. It was only the second time this season that CU has hit 10 or more three-pointers in a game. Sophomore forward
Amare Smith hit four three-pointers—for the second time this season—as the Huntington, West Virginia native is shooting 52.1 percent from three-point range in his last five games (12-for-23). Senior guard
Ethan Heller aided in the display as he hit three of his five attempts. After a slow start from three-point range to the start the season, the Thornville, Ohio native has now hit multiple three-pointers in five of his last six games, going 13-for-25 (52 percent) from beyond the arc in that span. Junior guard
JJ Harper added two triples at WVWC for part of his team-high 18 points.
A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING
Though he was held to 12 points and just nine shot attempts, graduate guard
Lual Daniel Rahama affected the game in several ways Wednesday. Rahama added nine rebounds—to extend his streak of eight or more rebounds to six games—and passed out a career-best seven assists. It was the most assists for a CU player this season, surpassing Heller's two games of five. Heller added four assists on Wednesday night as he did not commit a turnover. It was Heller's fifth career game with at least three assists and no turnovers. Senior forward
Jevon Laidler was busy on Wednesday night as well as he came up with 10 points and eight rebounds, just missing his first career double-double. Â
ONE-SIDED REBOUNDING
As has become custom this winter, Concord went to work on the glass at West Virginia Wesleyan as it held a lopsided 45-27 advantage on the boards. In fact, the Mountain Lions ripped down 20 offensive rebounds alone, marking the third time in 2022-23 that CU has recorded 20 or more offensive boards. Five of the nine rebounds for Rahama was on the offensive end, and Smith did most of his boarding work on the offensive glass—four of five. Rahama is the only player in the MEC averaging nine or more rebounds per game (9.5). The Mountain Lions' rebounding margin of +7.7 is 19
th in Division II. D&E had a 38-35 edge on Concord last season in its 80-65 win, but Concord was +6 on the glass (41-35) in an 88-78 win in February.
BRING YOUR BEST
Prior to both teams picking up double-digit wins over the other last year, two games in 2021 between CU and Davis & Elkins went to overtime, both Concord wins—107-100 in double overtime March 1 and 87-82 in overtime February 13. Smith was vital in last year's win as he went for a career-high 28 points on 11-for-18 shooting while adding 11 rebounds. Rahama threw in 15 points and seven rebounds. Heller has saved some of his best games for the Senators as he has averaged 15 points per game, including 28 points in the MEC Tournament win over the Davis & Elkins two years ago.
SEEING RED
In its three recent wins over D&E, the Mountain Lions have shot 47 percent or better from the field in each contest, including going over 50 percent twice. Concord shot 47.2 percent in last February's win as nearly half of its 88 points, 40, came in the paint. Fifth-year senior forward
Da'Vion Moore came off the bench for seven points as he hit three of his six shots two years ago. Heller canned six three-pointers as part of his 28 points in March 2021 versus Davis & Elkins. Not only has CU been able to shred the nets versus D&E recently, the Mountain Lions enter Saturday having shot 47 percent or better from the floor in five of their last eight games, and haven't dipped under 43 percent in that stretch.
WITH A PURPOSE
Some of the best rim protectors will be on display Saturday afternoon as the Senators' Clarens Pierre ranks second in the MEC in blocks per game (1.7). Laidler swatted his 16
th shot of the season Wednesday and is sixth in the MEC with 1.2 blocks per game. Harper is right behind with 15 blocks and tied for seventh in the conference. Harper tallied his fourth multi-block game of the season Wednesday with two blocks against West Virginia Wesleyan. CU is second in the MEC in blocks per game (4.2) and sits 31
st nationally. Davis & Elkins swats 3.0 shots per game.
