ON THE BOARDS
In a loss at Wheeling Saturday afternoon, Concord was outrebounded for just the fifth time in 12 games this season. The Cardinals held a 41-38 edge on the boards. However, junior forward
Kyndra Pilant came off the bench to aid the Mountain Lions' rebounding with a career-best 13 in just 15 minutes of action. The 13 boards were the most for a Concord player this season. Both graduate guard
Maggie Guynn and junior guard
Jaisah Smith tied their season high with seven rebounds in the losing effort. Wednesday's game will be a battle of top five rebounding teams in the MEC as CU is tied for third in the league in rebounding margin (2.4) while WVWC is fifth (1.5).
GRAB IT
CU came up one steal shy of double digits at Wheeling which would have been the sixth time in the last seven games that the Mountain Lions collected 10 steals. Against Emory & Henry and West Liberty last week, the Maroon and Gray had at least one player with five steals: Smith (seven) at Emory & Emory and junior guard
Maddie Ratcliff (five) versus West Liberty. Graduate forward
Alexis Phillips tallied a career-best four steals to pace Concord at Wheeling. Junior guard
Nakaila Gray added two steals for her sixth game of the season with multiple steals. Concord's defense is forcing 10.3 steals per game this season which ranks fourth in the MEC.
KNOCK EM DOWN
One of the highlights of Saturday's game was the Mountain Lions' continued success at the foul line. It was the fourth straight game in which CU shot 70 percent or better from the free-throw stripe (71.4 percent/15-for-21). Freshman forward
Abbie Smith was 4-for-5 at the foul line Saturday and is shooting a stellar 76.3 percent (29-for-38) at the charity stripe. Even after going 2-for-4 Saturday, J. Smith still leads the MEC in foul shooting (85.5 percent/47-of-55). If Wednesday's game is decided at the foul line, Concord holds a distinct advantage, shooting 70.5 percent (sixth in the MEC) while West Virginia Wesleyan is only making 57 percent of its free throws (11
th in the league).
BREAK OUT THE BROOMS
For the fourth time in the last five seasons, CU swept West Virginia Wesleyan last year with a pair of 12-point wins, 65-53 at home and 73-61 at WVWC's Rockefeller Center. Guynn averaged 21 points in two games last season versus the Bobcats while shooting 55.6 percent (15-for-27). For her career, Guynn is averaging 15 points per game in 10 games against West Virginia Wesleyan, and has two 20-point contests. Phillips tossed in one of her three career double-doubles in the road victory with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Ratcliff was vital in Concord's home win as she helped CU turn a two-point halftime lead into a comfortable win with eight points and a career-best five assists.
YOUNG GUNS
Twelve games into her career, A. Smith has proven to be one of the best freshmen in the MEC as she averages 10.9 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per contest (ninth in the conference). The Little Hocking, Ohio native has also added four double-doubles this winter. On the other sideline, freshman Emma Witt is the only Wesleyan player netting double figures as her 16.5 points per game ranks eighth in the MEC. Witt has also recorded seven or more rebounds in six games. With a roster made up of 14 freshmen and sophomores, the Bobcats have leaned on freshman M'laya Ainsworth from the perimeter as she has hit 35.1 percent of her three-pointers (20-for-57).
ONE AND DONE
Concord and West Virginia Wesleyan are two of the best offensive rebounding teams in the conference. The Mountain Lions are pulling down 14.3 offensive boards per contest (third in the MEC). WVWC is fourth in the league with 14.0 offensive rebounds per game. CU has recorded 10 or more offensive rebounds in 10 of its 12 games this year, including 15 at Wheeling. Five of the seven rebounds for J. Smith at Wheeling were on the offensive end. A. Smith ranks sixth in the MEC in offensive rebounds per game (3.5). Over the last 10 games against Concord—dating back to the 2018-19 season—West Virginia Wesleyan is averaging 15.8 offensive rebounds per game. The Maroon and Gray has only held WVWC under 10 offensive rebounds once in the last 10 meetings.

SCOUTING THE BOBCATS
Despite just one win this season, West Virginia Wesleyan has lost six games by 10 or fewer points, including Saturday's 79-69 setback at home versus West Virginia State. The lone victory for the Bobcats came December 5 against Salem, 74-72. Witt and veteran guard Courtney Wilfong are the only two players to start every game for WVWC. Wilfong averages 6.5 points and a team-best 3.4 assists per game. Wilfong was crucial in Wesleyan's last win in the series, a 67-56 win at home in February 2021.
