Concord Falls to West Virginia State

BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team lost 2-1 to West Virginia State Wednesday night in the Mountain East Conference opener for both teams at the YMCA Paul Cline Complex.

After a scoreless first half that saw Concord (2-1, 0-1 MEC) dominate possession by taking six shots to WVSU's one, it was the Yellow Jackets (3-0, 1-0 MEC) that scored first with a goal in the 48th minute. West Virginia State doubled its lead in the 66th minute with a goal directly off a corner kick.

The Mountain Lions responded in the 75th minute. After a West Virginia State handball in the penalty box on a corner kick, senior midfielder Michelle Brogden stepped up and converted a penalty kick to cut the deficit in half.

Still searching for a tying goal, CU peppered the area around the goal as Brogden and senior midfielder Courtney Smith each missed chances with Smith's shot sliding just past the left post in the 79th minute. A frantic scramble came in the final 15 seconds of the contest as senior forward Rachel Bell hit the crossbar, and fifth-year senior midfielder Leah Foster pushed a shot wide left.

Concord outshot West Virginia State, 18-7, as Brogden (five) and Smith (four) combined to outshoot the Yellow Jackets by themselves. Bell and Foster each had three shots. Three of the five shots for Brogden were on goal as CU finished with six shots on frame.

Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Leah Marsh made one save on the night.

The Mountain Lions conclude a two-game home stand when they host Davis & Elkins 6:00 p.m. Saturday.
