BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team won the final three games as it defeated WVU Tech in four sets Wednesday night in a non-conference match at Van Meter Gym.
After WVU Tech (3-5) took the first set 25-23, CU (4-6) came back to win 28-26 in the second, 25-17 in the third and 25-23 in the fourth.
Set 1
Other than a 5-2 lead to start the match neither team led by more than three points in the opening set. Tied at 21-21, a service ace from freshman setter
Kenzee Chaffin and a kill from sophomore outside hitter
Hannah Steele came at a crucial time to give Concord a two-point advantage. However, the Golden Bears scored the final four points of the game to win.
Set 2
The second game needed a few extra points to be played to decide a winner, and it was Concord that took the game as two kills by senior middle hitter
Amber Hall in the set's final three points were the difference. CU got down 10-5 to start the set, but rallied for a 15-14 lead. From there, neither team led by more than three points the rest of the way.
Set 3
Concord took its momentum from the second game, and it turned into a set three win with relative ease. Ten of the first 15 points belonged to Concord as Chaffin finished it off with a kill. WVU Tech got back to within 11-9, but it was as close as the Golden Bears would get as the Mountain Lions responded with a quick 5-2 scoring run.
Set 4
Looking like a decisive fifth set may be needed, the Mountain Lions ended the match on a 7-3 run to clinch the win in four sets. Facing a 20-18 deficit, kills by Hall and freshman setter/right side
Logan Newberry tied the set before an error gave CU the lead. WVU Tech tied the game at 21-21, but a kill and an ace from sophomore outside hitter
Gracie Brackney was part of three straight points as Concord won.
Match Stats
Chaffin broke the single-match assists record with 46 on Wednesday night. The record was previously held by Helen Thiesen against Davis & Elkins in November 2010. Brackney had a career-high 15 kills to go with 11 digs for her career double-double. Hall chipped in 15 kills.
Chaffin (46 assists, 11 digs) and Steele (10 kills, 12 digs) both had double-doubles as well. Junior middle hitter
Kyndra Pilant tallied 11 kills.
CU hit .234 in the match while holding WVU Tech to .139.
The Mountain Lions travel to the Seton Hill beginning 9:45 a.m. Friday against Lock Haven.
