Concord Splits Friday Matches at Seton Hill

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Concord University volleyball team went 1-1 in the first day of competition at the Seton Hill Tournament inside the McKenna Center Friday.

Concord downed Lock Haven in five sets before falling to Pitt-Johnstown in three games. CU is now 5-7 this season.

Match 1: Concord 3 – Lock Haven 2 (25-15, 24-26, 17-25, 25-15, 15-13)

Set 1
Concord jumped out on LHU with a 10-4 run and never looked back as it won by a comfortable 10 points to open the match. Sophomore outside hitter Hannah Steele had two of her seven kills during the opening game in CU's early offense. The Bald Eagles never got closer than six points for the remainder of the set.

Set 2
The second game was tight throughout as neither team led by more than three points. Down 24-22, Concord scored consecutive points with one coming on a kill from senior middle hitter Amber Hall. However, Lock Haven fended off the CU comeback and won by two points to even the match.

Set 3
The Mountain Lions erased an early 8-3 deficit as they got within 15-13 after an error from LHU. But, the Bald Eagles scored five straight points to separate themselves in a crucial third game.

Set 4
CU swung the momentum back quickly in the fourth game. Up 12-11, the Maroon and Gray used a 7-0 run, with two points coming on a pair of service aces from freshman setter Kenzee Chaffin and two more on kills by Hall, to open up a 19-11 edge.

Set 5
CU trailed throughout the decisive game until it took a 12-11 lead on a kill from Chaffin. Steele followed with a service aces, and a block from sophomore outside hitter Gracie Brackney and Hall made it four straight points as Concord closed out Lock Haven.

Match Stats
Hall tallied a season-high 16 kills to go with seven total blocks. Steele had a team-best 17 kills. Junior middle hitter Kyndra Pilant recorded a double-double of 13 kills and 13 digs. Chaffin racked up 44 assists and 10 digs for her own double-double.

CU hit .218 while holding Lock Haven to .163.
 
Match 2: Pitt-Johnstown 3 – Concord 0 (16-25, 23-25, 23-25)

Set 1
The Mountain Lions got in an early 9-3 hole as it got within five, 13-8, but never any closer.

Set 2
Like the first game, Concord fell behind 12-5. This time, Concord erased the deficit as it got within two points four times in the set. The closest the Mountain Lions got to tying was at 23-22 after a service ace from freshman right side/setter Logan Newberry. However, UPJ held off the Mountain Lions.

Set 3
Trailing 19-15, Concord rattled off four straight points to tie the set. A block from Brackney and Hall highlighted the scoring. A kill from Pilant chipped the deficit to 24-23, but the next point belonged to the Mountain Cats.

Match Stats
Steele just missed a double-double with nine kills and 11 digs. Chaffin added 23 assists and seven digs.

Concord plays Point Park 9:00 p.m. Saturday and host Seton Hill at 4:30 p.m. to close the weekend.
