Concord Downs Bob Jones, 2-1

BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team overcame a 1-0 deficit, and scored two second-half goals to defeat Bob Jones 2-1 Tuesday evening in a non-conference contest at the YMCA Cline Complex.

The Mountain Lions (1-2-2) were held to three total shots and one on goal in the first half as BJU (0-1) scored in the 18th minute after a deflected shot fell right onto the foot of Mario Figueroa.

In the 47th minute, senior midfielder Michael Shelor sent a shot just wide of the target, but Concord broke through four minutes later. Off a free kick from right of the goal, freshman midfielder Joel Walker smashed a shot inside the left post to equalize the contest.

Shelor got another look at goal in the 56th minute, but had his attempt saved.

The Mountain Lions came up with a goal in the 71st minute to gain the lead for good. Freshman forward Louis Cole received a pass from freshman defender Alex Harris. Cole was able to fire the shot from right to left across the goal face to push CU ahead.

Freshman goalkeeper Keegan Grant had to save shots in the 80th and 86th minutes to help Concord hang on for the victory.

The Maroon and Gray closed the gap in total shots in the second half as they outshot the Bruins, 7-5. Bob Jones owned a 12-10 edge in total shots. However, Concord took three more corner kicks (5-2).

Cole and Shelor combined for seven of the 10 shots, and the duo had four of the five shots on goal.

CU will be back in action Sunday when it travels to Notre Dame for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
