Concord Scores Five Times in Shutout of Chowan

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Concord University women's soccer team scored four times in the first half as it eased its way to a 5-0 win over Chowan Saturday night in non-conference action at Hawks Field.

The scoring got started in the fourth minute as fifth-year senior forward Leah Foster received a through ball from senior midfielder Courtney Smith, and dribble down the side of the penalty box where she roped a shot from a sharp right angle that got past the goalkeeper.

The nationally-ranked 12th-rated Mountain Lions (2-0) built the lead in the 20th minute as Smith once again found herself on the ball. The Fayetteville, West Virginia native cut through two defenders and left a pass on the foot of sophomore forward Jayme Millard who found the back of the net for the second time this season.

The next two CU goals came off corner kicks.

In the 35th minute, senior midfielder Michelle Brogden lifted a corner into the six-yard box where redshirt freshman midfielder Reeanna Cook headed the ball into the left side of the net. Just before halftime, a Concord corner kick was unable to be cleared by the Hawks (0-3) as it made its way into the net for an own goal.

Out of halftime, Millard outran a Chowan defender down the left side of the field and slipped a shot into the open net in the 47th minute—after the goalkeeper had come out on a failed clearance.

In her first career start, sophomore goalkeeper Savannah Bates made four of her five saves in the second half as she preserved a shutout for Concord.

The Mountain Lions owned a 21-10 advantage in shots and took nine corners to Chowan's two.

Millard led the way with six shots. Three of the four shots for senior forward Rachel Bell were on target.

Concord opens up Mountain East Conference play 5:30 p.m. Wednesday when it hosts West Virginia State at the YMCA Cline Complex in Beckley, West Virginia.
