BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to nationally-ranked Charleston Wednesday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference clash at the YMCA Paul Cline Complex.
CU (2-5-2, 1-5-1 MEC) withstood several Charleston (8-1, 7-1 MEC) chances early in the game as the Golden Eagles didn't break through until their 11
th shot of the game—in the 40
th minute.
It was Concord that nearly took a lead in the 37
th minute as freshman midfielder
Jack Hughes had a shot blocked with the goalkeeper out of the net. Nine seconds later, in the scramble, sophomore defender
Esteban Correa slid a shot wide left.
UC connected on a free kick for a score in the 68
th minute, and a third goal came in the 74
th minute.
The Mountain Lions had six shots in the contest with two coming from freshman midfielder
Joel Walker. A pair of shots from senior midfielder
Michael Shelor and freshman midfielder
Tomas Kelly were denied in the 75
th minute over a 17-second span.
After stopping seven shots versus Alderson Broaddus, freshman goalkeeper
Tommy Smith made eight saves against the ninth-ranked Golden Eagles.
Concord's five-game homestand continues 12:00 p.m. Saturday versus Wheeling.
