Concord Battles in Tough Loss to Charleston

BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to nationally-ranked Charleston Wednesday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference clash at the YMCA Paul Cline Complex.

CU (2-5-2, 1-5-1 MEC) withstood several Charleston (8-1, 7-1 MEC) chances early in the game as the Golden Eagles didn't break through until their 11th shot of the game—in the 40th minute.

It was Concord that nearly took a lead in the 37th minute as freshman midfielder Jack Hughes had a shot blocked with the goalkeeper out of the net. Nine seconds later, in the scramble, sophomore defender Esteban Correa slid a shot wide left.

UC connected on a free kick for a score in the 68th minute, and a third goal came in the 74th minute.

The Mountain Lions had six shots in the contest with two coming from freshman midfielder Joel Walker. A pair of shots from senior midfielder Michael Shelor and freshman midfielder Tomas Kelly were denied in the 75th minute over a 17-second span.

After stopping seven shots versus Alderson Broaddus, freshman goalkeeper Tommy Smith made eight saves against the ninth-ranked Golden Eagles.

Concord's five-game homestand continues 12:00 p.m. Saturday versus Wheeling.
