INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with West Virginia State Sunday evening in a Mountain East Conference contest at Dickerson Stadium.
CU (5-2-1, 3-2-1 MEC) struck first in the game as senior defender
Zoe Belding found the back of the net for the second straight game, off a corner kick from senior midfielder
Michelle Brogden. After the ball deflected for a moment off the corner, Belding scored in the 25
th minute.
West Virginia State (7-0-1, 5-0-1 MEC) answered with a goal in the 32
nd minute on a set piece—a free kick from 40 yards that was redirected into the goal.
While the Yellow Jackets tallied 24 shots in the game, Concord seemingly had the better chances in the second half. Fifth-year senior forward
Leah Foster had shots saved in the 52
nd and 58
th minutes.
Sophomore midfielder
Leah Fleming had a shot just outside the six-yard box sail over the goal in the 72
nd minute. Three minutes later, redshirt freshman midfielder
Reeanna Cook had an attempt turned aside. The final shot for either team was a Cook attempt that went off target in the final two minutes.
The Mountain Lions recorded 14 shots in the game. WVSU had a 10-8 edge in shots on goal. Foster tallied five shots with four on frame. Fleming registered two shots.
Fifth-year senior goalkeeper
Leah Marsh tied her career high with nine saves.
Concord returns home to face Charleston 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the YMCA Cline Complex in Beckley, West Virginia.
