BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team picked up a 1-0 win over Alderson Broaddus Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East game at the YMCA Paul Cline Complex.
The difference in the game was 71
st minute free kick goal from freshman midfielder
Joel Walker. The free kick came from approximately 20 yards, and was slotted inside the left post after a foul on the Battlers (1-6-2, 1-5-1 MEC).
CU (2-4-2, 1-4-1 MEC) had ample chances in the first half as it collected 13 first-half shots, and tied a season high with 18 shots for the game. The Mountain Lions peppered the goal with three shots in a 40-second span in the 11
th and 12
th minutes. Walker had a shot taken off the line by an AB defender, freshman forward
Louis Cole had his shot stopped, and senior midfielder
Michael Shelor's heading attempt was turned aside.
Concord took seven corners in the first half to go with the 13 shots, but the game remained 0-0 at halftime. Shelor and junior midfielder
Ricardo Chinea-Pegler had looks at the goal with Chinea-Pegler pushing a shot high in the 49
th minute, and Shelor sliding an attempt right in the 52
nd minute.
After some midfield play over the next 20 minutes, Walker broke through CU in the 71
st minute.
With the slim margin, the Mountain Lions had to dodge a shot off the crossbar in the 83
rd minute, and freshman goalkeeper
Tommy Smith had to save a free kick from 25 yards with 10 seconds remaining to secure the win.
Smith and the Concord defense picked up its first shutout of the season. In his first career start, Smith made seven saves.
The Mountain Lions had five more shots than Alderson Broaddus, but had just one more shot on goal, 8-7, than the Battlers. Chinea-Pegler had a game-high five shots. All three of Walker's shots were on frame.
