CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A goal in the second half was enough to lift the Concord University women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Charleston Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference clash.
With the first half only featuring nine total shots and seven on goal, fifth-year senior goalkeeper
Leah Marsh turned aside three Charleston (3-3, 3-1 MEC) shots to keep the contest scoreless at halftime.
The first shot of the second half for the Mountain Lions (4-2, 2-2 MEC) found the back of the net.
After a long pass was sent down the right flank to fifth-year senior forward
Leah Foster, she was able to get to the right edge of the 18-yard box where a pass was sent to sophomore midfielder
Leah Fleming who was crashing towards the goal. Fleming was able to fire in her second goal of the season in the 58
th minute.
Less than a minute later, sophomore forward
Kylene Franklin nearly doubled the CU lead as her shot was sent high. And in the 62
nd minute, Fleming found herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper from 15 yards, but the shot was saved.
In the final 25 minutes of the game, UC was only able to get two shots off as Marsh stopped one in the 73
rd minute to finish off her first shutout of the season.
Seven of the nine shots in the game for the Mountain Lions were on goal as Fleming and sophomore forward
Jayme Millard both had two shots on goal. Marsh made five saves in total. Concord had a small 8-6 edge in corner kicks.
With Sunday's win, Concord has now won five straight games at Charleston.
CU returns to the YMCA Cline Complex in Beckley 6:00 p.m. Wednesday to face Glenville State
