ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team rolled to a sweep of WVU Tech, 25-14, 25-17, 25-20, Wednesday night in a non-conference match at the Carter Center.
Concord improves to 6-9 this season while WVU Tech falls to 3-8.
Set 1
The Mountain Lions scored 11 of the first 15 points of the match and never looked back. Freshman right side
Maddie Bohan and senior middle hitter
Amber Hall combined for five kills in the early offense. After WVU Tech got to within 14-8, the Concord lead swelled to 20-10, the first double-digit lead of the match for the Maroon and Gray.
Set 2
Like the first game, Concord ran out 9-3 on the Golden Bears. Sophomore outside hitter
Hannah Steele contributed three kills to open the set. WVU Tech climbed back to within 10-8, but CU scored four straight points—including three on kills from sophomore outside hitter
Gracie Brackney—as the Mountain Lions never trailed in the set.
Set 3
The Maroon and Gray needed a small comeback at the midway point of the third game to secure the sweep—and they leaned on Steele to lead the charge. Trailing 14-11, Steele was responsible for six of the next eight CU points. Sophomore defensive specialist
Kaylee Spees threw in a service ace early in the spurt, and freshman right side
Logan Newberry capped the 8-1 run with a kill. Up 19-15, Concord never trailed again as junior setter
Kristin Lough had back-to-back service aces to serve out the match.
Match Stats
Lough tallied her first career double-double with 16 assists and 10 digs. Powered by eight kills in the third set alone, Steele finished with 17 kills and a hitting percentage of .359. Freshman setter
Kenzee Chaffin added 17 assists and eight digs. Brackney just missed a double-double with seven kills and nine digs.
CU hit .245 in the match and held WVU Tech to .032.
