Concord Falters Against West Virginia State

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team lost in three sets to West Virginia State Tuesday night to start Mountain East Conference play at the Carter Center.

WVSU (14-1, 1-0 MEC) took the match 25-15, 25-21, 25-14 over the Mountain Lions (6-10, 0-1 MEC).

Set 1
CU was able to take an early 7-6 lead on the Yellow Jackets after consecutive errors from the visitors. However, five straight points gave the West Virginia State a lead it would not give back. The Mountain Lions got within 15-14 after a kill from junior middle hitter Kyndra Pilant, but WVSU rattled off five points in a row.

Set 2
After falling behind 13-8, Concord surged to within 13-12 after four straight errors from the Yellow Jackets. CU's momentum continued against the MEC South preseason favorite as an assisted block from senior middle hitter Amber Hall and sophomore outside hitter Hannah Steele, and another Pilant kill tied the set 19-19. But, West Virginia State finished the game on a 6-3 run.

Set 3
West Virginia State jumped out 9-2 in the game as Concord was only able to get within 15-9 after a kill from sophomore middle hitter Gracie Brackney. The Maroon and Gray pulled within six a second time, 19-13, after an error, but it was close as they would get.

Match Stats
Freshman setter Kenzee Chaffin recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 19 assists and 12 digs. Steele pitched in a team-high 10 kills. And nine of the 14 digs in the match for graduate defensive specialist Kelli Ellison came in the first set.

The Mountain Lions finish up a three-match homestand when they welcome West Virginia Wesleyan to the Carter Center 7:00 p.m. Friday.
