CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Concord University volleyball team lost matches to North Greenville and Wingate Saturday at the Queens Classic inside Curry Arena.
Match 1: North Greenville 3 – Concord 0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-18)
Set 1
Other than a short-lived 7-4 lead for NGU, neither team led by three points again until the Crusaders went up 16-13. A kill and a service ace from sophomore outside hitter
Hannah Steele drew CU even at 19-19. But, North Greenville got some separation with four straight points.
Set 2
NGU got out to an 8-2 lead on the Mountain Lions. Concord had a response as it crept back to within 14-10 after a kill from junior middle hitter
Csayjah Whitelow. It was as close as the Maroon and Gray would get, however.
Set 3
Down 9-3 in the third game, Concord came storming back with a 6-3 scoring spurt. CU stayed within four points of the Crusaders until a 5-0 run from NGU at 16-13 gave it the breathing room it needed.
Match Stats
Senior middle hitter
Amber Hall paced Concord with nine kills on just 19 attempts, hitting .421. Steele came up with eight kills. Freshman setter
Kenzee Chaffin netted 27 assists and seven digs.
Match 2: Wingate 3 – Concord 0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-17)
Set 1
Concord fell behind 9-3 in the opening set as it was never able to rally from the early deficit.
Set 2
The Mountain Lions took a 9-8 lead after a WU attack error and a kill from junior middle hitter
Kyndra Pilant. Wingate went on a 5-0 run, but the Mountain Lions answered with five straight points of their own. Sophomore outside hitter
Gracie Brackney recorded two of her seven kills. Up 14-13 on the Bulldogs, the Mountain Lions and Wingate went back-and-forth until WU took a 21-17 lead.
Set 3
Concord recovered after Wingate scored four of the first five points of the set to get within 12-11 after a service ace from Chaffin. CU stayed within striking distance of the Bulldogs until WU pulled away at 20-17.
Match Stats
Brackney tallied 12 digs to go with her seven kills. Steele added six kills and Pilant had another five. Chaffin collected 17 assists while adding six digs.
The Mountain Lions prepare to host the Concord Classic September 1-3 at the Carter Center. CU's first match is 3:00 p.m. Friday against UVa.-Wise.
