ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team opened up the Concord Classic with a straight sets win over Salem Thursday afternoon at the Carter Center.
The Mountain Lions (1-4) took the match 25-13, 25-18, 25-16 behind a team hitting percentage of .296.
Set 1
Concord could not shake off Salem (0-6) early in the set, however, the Maroon and Gray was able to build a 15-9 lead as it capped a 4-0 scoring spurt with kills by freshman setter
Kenzee Chaffin and sophomore outside hitter
Hannah Steele. After SU drew to within 18-13, CU finished the game on an 8-1 run. Steele served up three aces while junior middle hitter
Kyndra Pilant collected two kills.
Set 2
The Mountain Lions carried the momentum into the second game as they scored 12 of the first 16 points in the middle set. The early offense was spurred by five combined kills from senior middle hitter
Amber Hall and Steele. Salem was able to rebound as it drew to within 19-14. But, CU held off any further Salem threat as it won by seven points.
Set 3
Concord jumped out to a 7-2 advantage, but Salem rallied to tie the set at 13-13 and 14-14. Holding on to a 16-15 edge, the Mountain Lions rattled seven consecutive points to gain the edge it needed to close out the game and match. Steele added two more aces while Hall had two of her team-best 11 kills during the run.
Match Stats
Hall hit .625 and added six digs on the day. Steele chipped in nine kills and five aces. Junior middle hitter
Csayjah Whitelow had six kills and also hit .625.
Chaffin recorded 17 assists while junior setter
Kristin Lough went for 15 assists. Fifth-year senior defensive specialist
Kelli Ellison notched 10 digs.
The Mountain Lions face UVa.-Wise 3:00 p.m. Friday before taking on Indiana (Pa.) at 7:00 p.m.
