Concord Uses Fleming's Late Goal to Slip Past Gannon, 3-2

BECKLEY, W.Va. – Sophomore midfielder Leah Fleming's goal in the 85th minute lifted the Concord University women's soccer team to a 3-2 win over Gannon Thursday afternoon in a non-conference clash at the YMCA Paul Cline Complex.

The Mountain Lions (1-0) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead through the first 10 minutes of the game. After CU went up 2-0, Gannon (0-1) responded with a goal in the 11th minute. The contest remained a one-goal advantage for Concord until the 81st minute when the Golden Knights scored a second unanswered goal.

Now tied at 2-2 in the 85th minute, the Maroon and Gray was able to play out of the back as sophomore forward Jayme Millard made a run down the right flank. As she got free, Fleming made her run into the middle of the 18-yard box. Millard was able to fend off a Gannon defender and found Fleming who ripped a shot to the top left corner for the game-deciding goal.

GU was unable to get a shot off in the final five minutes once trailing by a goal.

Senior midfielder Michelle Brogden got Concord on the board in the first five minutes of the game on a goal assisted by senior forward Rachel Bell. The lead was extended in the 10th minute as Millard scored her first career goal after a Gannon turnover in the defensive third of the field.

Fifth-year senior forward Leah Foster nearly restored a two-goal advantage in the 70th minute as she found herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but was denied.

The Mountain Lions held a 14-10 edge in total shots in the game, and had three more shots on goal (9-6) than Gannon. Brogden and Foster combined for seven of the shots with all three of Foster's shots coming on target.

Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Leah Marsh made four saves in the contest.

The 12th-ranked Mountain Lions will be off from action until September 3 when they travel to Chowan in their only other non-conference game of the season.
