RECORDS
Concord is 18-10-1 this season after an 11-8 win over Emory & Henry Tuesday. CU is 7-5 against conference foes.
West Virginia State is coming off a 17-9 midweek victory over Bluefield State to even its record at 12-12. The Yellow Jackets are 4-8 in the MEC.

METAL MACHINE
After being held under 10 hits in all four games of a road trip to Frostburg State and Fairmont State, the Mountain Lions broke out for 13 hits against Emory & Henry. Freshman infielder/pitcher MJ Hunter collected his second career three-hit game as he drove in two runs. Sophomore infielder Zack Saryeldin added three more hits for his team-best 20th multi-hit game of the season. Going back to the end of last season, the Weston, Florida native has 34 multi-hit games in his last 50 contests. In the win over E&H, freshman catcher Joey Duffer notched his ninth multi-hit game of the season as he drove in three runs, including two RBI on his first career triple. Concord begins the weekend second in the MEC and 16th in Division II in team batting average (.329). Saryeldin is third in the conference in batting (.429) and tied for 22nd nationally.

STRONG ARMS
Freshman pitcher Jacob Nester was the losing pitcher in a 1-0 defeat at Fairmont State Sunday afternoon, but the Carroll County, Virginia native joined an exclusive club. Nester became the fifth pitcher over the last five seasons to toss at least six innings and allow one or fewer earned runs in a start. Sophomore pitcher Andrew Neff has accomplished the feat once this season against Bluefield State and did the same last year in the MEC Tournament against Charleston. Nester's pitching coach, Trent Abernathy, went nine innings and only allowed one run in last year's postseason versus Wheeling. The other two are Will Guay and Troy Beckner from the 2019 season. Nester tied his career high in strikeouts at FSU. On Tuesday, freshman pitcher Justin Carden tossed five innings in his first career start and only allowed three runs, but received a no decision. Among qualified CU pitchers, Carden is tied for second in ERA with fifth-year senior Anthony Stehlin at 3.09. Freshman pitcher Rylee Nicholas leads the way at 1.61.

YOU, AGAIN?
Concord and West Virginia State met up six times during the 2021 season with WVSU winning five of the six games. The Mountain Lions lost three of four games during the regular season on the road before West Virginia State won two games in the MEC Championship Series versus CU. In his first career start, sophomore pitcher Eddie Blake limited the Yellow Jackets to a run and three hits over five innings last spring. Junior infielder Juan Fortique drove in a career-best four runs in a 9-3 win for Concord. Saryeldin finished the season going 4-for-8 against West Virginia State in the MEC Tournament. Four of the 15 career doubles for junior outfielder Josh Adkins, who grew up five miles from WVSU's campus, have come against West Virginia State.

WEST VIRGINIA STATE AT A GLANCE
The Yellow Jackets have won three of their last four games after a five-game losing streak. The 19 hits West Virginia State pounded out against Bluefield State Thursday were a season best. WVSU has 10 games with at least 10 hits this season. Trey Junkins is hitting a team-best .321 to go along with a team-high 18 RBI. Michael Stone had five hits in the MEC Tournament against CU last season. Nine different pitchers have started at least one game for West Virginia State. Quincy Thornton has an ERA of 4.43 in five starts across 22.1 innings. Thornton has 19 strikeouts this season.
