Concord Finishes Off Four-Game Sweep of West Virginia Wesleyan, 21-10, 14-2

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team completed its four-game sweep of West Virginia Wesleyan with 21-10 and 14-2 wins Saturday afternoon at Anderson Field in Mountain East Conference action.

The Mountain Lions improve to 24-12-1 overall and 13-7 in the MEC. WVWC is now 2-29 and 2-18 versus league foes.

Game 1: Concord 21 – West Virginia Wesleyan 10
After scoring 36 runs in two games Friday, CU picked up where it left off in the first game. The Mountain Lions tallied 21 hits, including eight for extra bases.
Wesleyan plated a run in the top of the first, but the deficit was quickly erased in a four-run bottom half for Concord. Junior outfielder Kyle Keenan got the Mountain Lions on the board with a two-run single before RBI hits from junior infielder Daniel Layne and junior outfielder Josh Adkins.

CU extended its lead to 6-2 after two innings, and erupted for nine runs in the third. With one out and the bases loaded, fifth-year senior infielder Anthony Stehlin cleared the bases with a triple to right center field. Also highlighted in the inning was a two-run double from freshman catcher Joey Duffer.

Concord plated three more runs in the fourth, and sophomore catcher/infielder Chris Satcher's sixth home run of the season in the fifth inning grew the lead to 19-8. RBI singles from Stehlin and sophomore outfielder D.J. Christian in the sixth finalized the CU scoring in game one.

Stehlin finished a home run shy of the cycle as he drove in four runs to go with three hits. Keenan added three hits and four more RBI. Adkins, freshman infielder/pitcher MJ Hunter and Layne each had two hits and two RBI. Christian was 4-for-5 at the bottom of the order.

Freshman pitcher Jacob Nester (3-2) went four innings to qualify for the win. Sophomore pitcher Nick Herrerias picked up his first career save by recording the final nine outs.

Game 2: Concord 14 – West Virginia 2
Concord broke open game two with a nine-run third inning on its way to the four-game sweep of Wesleyan.

Sophomore infielder Zack Saryeldin gave CU a 2-1 edge with an RBI single to open the scoring in the third. Keenan backed it up with a three-run home run, his third of the season and second of the series. On the very next pitch, Satcher hit his second home run in as many games. Adkins tripled to the right center gap to plate a pair of runs. And Christian and Keenan capped the scoring with an RBI single each.

The Mountain Lions scored a run each in the fourth and fifth innings and got two runs in the sixth on run-scoring hits from Keenan and fifth-year senior outfielder Brandon Bayne.

Keenan knocked in a career-best six runs as he had three hits. Saryeldin registered three hits. Adkins had another two-hit, two-RBI game.

Freshman pitcher Justin Carden tossed the first five innings for Concord as he improved to 2-0. Carden scattered five hits and two runs while striking out five.

For the series, Concord outscored West Virginia Wesleyan 71-19. Christian was 10-for-16 with 14RBI. Keenan had one less hit in 17 at-bats, but matched Christian with 14 RBI. Saryeldin and Stehlin combined for 21 hits and 21 runs scored.

CU visits Davis & Elkins next weekend for a four-game series starting 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
