Concord Moves Win Streak to Six with Sweep of Davis & Elkins, 4-2, 11-1

ELKINS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team ran its winning streak to six with two wins over Davis & Elkins, 4-2 and 11-1, at Harpertown Field in Mountain East Conference action.

The Mountain Lions improve to 26-12-1 this season and 15-7 against MEC teams. Davis & Elkins is now 6-28 overall and 3-19 in the conference.

Game 1: Concord 4 – Davis & Elkins 2
Freshman catcher Joey Duffer provided two clutch hits, and sophomore pitcher Andrew Neff was stellar once again on the mound in the game one win.

Each teams scored in the first inning as sophomore infielder Zack Saryeldin came in on a Senators' error after a leadoff single to begin the game.

CU went right back to work in the second inning as freshman infielder MJ Hunter led off with a single before Duffer went to the opposite field in right for his second home run of the season to push Concord up 3-1.

D&E scratched across a run in the third against Neff to cut the deficit to one run. However, the Fredericksburg, Virginia native settled in, and retired seven straight and 13 of the last 14 batters he faced to take control of the game.

Duffer came up with some insurance for his battery mate in the sixth. After a leadoff double from sophomore catcher/infielder Chris Satcher, CU was unable to plate the run until Duffer stroked a single to left field with two outs to restore the two-run edge.

Neff tossed his sixth complete game of the season as he improved to 8-2. He struck out seven and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits.

Junior outfielder Josh Adkins, Duffer and Saryeldin all had two this with Duffer driving in three runs.

Game 2: Concord 11 – Davis & Elkins 1
CU broke game two open with a five-run third inning and never looked back on its way to a day one sweep.

Three straight singles loaded the bases to begin the third inning before a sacrifice fly from junior infielder Daniel Layne opened the scoring. Duffer followed with a run-scoring hit before Adkins plated a pair of runs with a single into center field. Fifth-year senior infielder Anthony Stehlin capped the inning with a two-out RBI double.

Concord continued its rally into the fourth as three more runs came across.

Satcher's double brought in junior outfielder Kyle Keenan who had led off the inning with a single and stolen base. Satcher scored on Layne's second sacrifice fly in as many innings. Duffer was able to restart the inning with a single and his own steal before touching home on Adkins' third RBI of the contest.

The run support was more than enough for sophomore pitcher Eddie Blake who carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before allowing a one-out single. D&E plated a run in the fifth to break up the shutout bid.

The Mountain Lions tacked on a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Layne notched his third and fourth RBI of the day with a two-run single in the seventh.

He finished the day 1-for-3 with four RBI. Keenan was a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs scored. Satcher had three hits including a double. Adkins, Duffer and sophomore infielder Michael Dupont and Stehlin all had two hits as part of CU's 17-hit afternoon.

In his complete game, Blake (5-3) gave up two hits and an unearned run while striking out seven.

Concord and Davis & Elkins complete their series 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
