ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team swept Frostburg State in its Mountain East Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon at the CU Softball Field.
Game 1: Concord 4 – Frostburg State 3 (Eight Innings)
Concord (14-26, 7-13 MEC) walked off Frostburg State (19-12, 14-6 MEC) on a bases loaded walk in the eighth inning to win game one.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, freshman first baseman/outfielder
Kassidy Garvey hit a lead-off single and was pinch ran for by freshman shortstop/second baseman
Kayla McCraw. After a walk to freshman pitcher/infielder
Rachael Koller, freshman second baseman/outfielder
Aubrey Matice singled to load the bases. On a full count pitch with two outs, senior pitcher/outfielder
Laura Thompson watched ball four to walk off Frostburg State.
Down 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning, CU put two runners into scoring position with two outs. Junior catcher/outfielder
Jolie Privett singled to left field to score senior third baseman/outfielder
Sarah Thompson and cut the deficit to one.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, freshman third baseman
Kylee Stacy led off with a single up the middle. S. Thompson made it a 3-2 game by blasting a pitch over the center field wall for a two-RBI home run.
Frostburg State scored a run in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at 3-3.
Offensively, Matice recorded a career-high three hits in the game. S. Thompson had two hits, including the two-run home run.
Caitlyn Bauer (8-10) earned the win in the circle, while pitching a complete game. Bauer also tossed four strikeouts and allowed two earned runs.
Game 2: Concord 5 – Frostburg State 3
Concord scored two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to hold off Frostburg State in game two.
Tied 0-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Concord worked two runners into scoring position. Koller singled up the middle and advanced to second on the throw. Privett scored, while Garvey advanced to third on the play. A bunt single from fifth-year senior outfielder
Hanna Hylton loaded the bases. A drawn walk from L. Thompson scored Garvey to put Concord 2-0.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, S. Thompson led off the inning getting hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt from freshman shortstop/utility player
Courtney Raines advanced S. Thompson to second. A double to center field from Garvey scored S. Thompson to make it a 3-0 game. Garvey scored on a single from Koller to left field to extend Concord's lead to 4-0.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Stacy singled on a bunt before S. Thompson ripped a double off the fence in center field to score Stacy and put Concord up 5-0.
Frostburg State scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning, but the Mountain Lions slammed the door on the Bobcats' comeback to win game two.
At the plate, Koller batted 2-for-3 with two RBI. L. Thompson, S. Thompson, and Garvey recorded one RBI each.
In the circle, Koller (6-11) was the winning pitcher in the contest. She struck out five batters and allowed three earned runs in a complete game effort.
CU returns to action Saturday at 12:00 p.m. against Fairmont State in an MEC doubleheader at the CU Softball Field.
