RECORDS
The Mountain Lions are 16-7-1 overall and 6-2 in conference play.
Frostburg State has won nine of its last 10 games with a 17-4 record overall and 7-1 in the MEC.
The Fighting Falcons are 11-12 overall, but 6-2 against league foes this season.
RECORD-SETTING DAY
In its 20-4 win over Alderson Broaddus Tuesday, Concord saw a handful of single-game program record go down. Paced by three doubles from junior outfielder
Kyle Keenan and another two doubles from sophomore infielder
Zack Saryeldin, the Mountain Lions tied the single-game, seven-inning team record for doubles with seven. Sophomore infielder
Michael Dupont and fifth-year senior infielder
Anthony Stehlin each added a double. Keenan's three doubles tied the seven-inning program record. For the season, Saryeldin has 17 doubles which is five away from breaking the single-season program record. The Weston, Florida native also leads all of NCAA, regardless of Division, in doubles. On the bases versus AB, junior outfielder
Josh Adkins swiped three bags to tie the single-game record. By saving the 8-6 win against Alderson Broaddus in game one, Stehlin set the career record for saves with his 12
th at CU. And on Monday versus Notre Dame, head coach
Kevin Garrett reached 500 wins for his career.
COMEBACK KIDS
CU stormed back from a four-run deficit to down Alderson Broaddus in game one Tuesday. Though it went 3-1 versus Notre Dame and Alderson Broaddus, Concord trailed in all four games. The Mountain Lions fell behind Alderson Broaddus through four innings, 5-1, before scoring seven unanswered runs. It was the third time this season that the Maroon and Gray trailed by at least four runs before coming back to win. The Mountain Lions trailed Pitt-Johnstown 6-1 before winning 9-7 and rallied from a 5-1 deficit against Kutztown before picking up a 6-5 victory. A game-tying triple from Adkins and a solo home run from Saryeldin was key in the comeback against AB as well as four shutout innings from fifth-year senior pitcher
Dan Nicholls out of the bullpen.
A COMPLETE TURNAROUND
Last season, Concord entered the final weekend of cross-division play at 0-8. CU won two games over Fairmont State before falling to Frostburg State twice—all four games were played at Anderson Field. In a 12-3 victory over Fairmont State, Stehlin tallied a five-RBI game while current Concord pitching coach
Trent Abernathy struck out 12 hitters. A walk off grand slam from junior outfielder
Richard Ortiz propelled Concord to a 6-4 win in game over FSU. Sophomore pitcher
Andrew Neff had eight strikeouts versus Frostburg State in his first career start. Saturday will be the first time that CU matches up with Frostburg State on the road in program history.
FROSTBURG STATE AT A GLANCE
Speaking of turnarounds, Frostburg State won just 14 games a season ago and is already more than halfway to its win total in MEC games from a season ago. The Bobcats are leading the MEC in batting average at .349. An all-conference player from 2021, Bryce Jackson has nine home runs and 22 RBI while hitting .414. Ethan Kiple is adding an average .423 to go with six home runs and 18 RBI. Jackson had six RBI in Frostburg State's 12-2 win over Concord last season. Jack Maruskin has made five starts on the mound and has 21 strikeouts in 18 innings to go with a 3.50 ERA. At the plate, Maruskin is hitting .421 with 12 RBI.
FAIRMONT STATE AT A GLANCE
First-year head coach Matt Yurish inherited a team with experience with six returning starters in the field. Fairmont State has hit 24 home runs this season with eight different players having launched at least two. Noah Canterbury is batting .384 with two home runs and 20 RBI. Logan Smith is 1-2 this season, but has an ERA of 3.55. Smith is coming off a start where he allowed one earned run over eight innings against Charleston. The pitching coach for FSU is former major leaguer David Carpenter who spent parts of six seasons as a reliever.
