WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Concord University softball team used a two-run sixth inning to slip past Lake Erie, 5-3, Tuesday afternoon at The Spring Games.
With the game tied at 3-3 after Lake Erie (0-3) knotted the game with a score in the top of the sixth, CU (4-10) took the lead on an RBI triple from freshman second baseman/shortstop
Kayla McCraw before she scored on a two-out RBI single from freshman third baseman
Kylee Stacy to give the Mountain Lions a two-run cushion. Freshman utility
Delaney Fulk started the rally with a one-out base hit before racing in on McCraw's extra-base knock.
Concord faced a 2-0 deficit after 2.5 innings, but the LEC lead was quickly erased on one swing from senior outfielder/pitcher
Laura Thompson in the bottom of the third. Freshman second baseman/outfielder
Aubrey Matice singled to start the inning before Stacy followed with a double—one of three hits on the day for Stacy. On Stacy's double, Matice raced in to get the Mountain Lions on the board. Thompson then sent her first home run of the season out of the park to give CU a 3-2 edge.
The margin held up until the Storm plated the tying run in the top of the sixth.
Freshman pitcher/infielder
Rachael Koller and freshman pitcher/first baseman
Caitlyn Bauer combined to strike out seven in the game as Bauer (2-4) picked up the win in relief, tossing the final two innings. Bauer allowed one hit and one run. Koller scattered eight hits and two runs while striking out four.
Stacy was the only Concord player with multiple hits in CU's 10-hit day. Thompson drove in three runs on her home run.
The Mountain Lions will have the day off Wednesday before facing nationally-ranked Minnesota State-Mankato Thursday in a doubleheader.
