Concord Sweeps Saturday Doubleheader from Kutztown, 6-5, 21-2

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team took the first two games of a weekend series against Kutztown, 6-5 and 21-2, Saturday afternoon at Anderson Field.

The Mountain Lions improve to 5-3-1 this season. KU drops to 4-8.

Game 1: Concord 6 – Kutztown 5
CU scored the final three runs of the game to erase a 5-3 third-inning deficit to snatch game one away from the Bears.

Down two runs after a Kutztown leadoff home run in the top of the third inning, sophomore infielder/catcher Chris Satcher drove in one of his two runs in the contest with a two-out hit to score fifth-year senior infielder Anthony Stehlin.

Still down 5-4 in the fifth, a leadoff single from junior outfielder Josh Adkins put a two-run fifth into action. Two batters later, sophomore infielder Michael Dupont came through with a pinch hit double into the right center field gap to plate Adkins. Dupont gave way to pinch runner and senior outfielder Brandon Bayne.

Bayne was able to score on a double from junior outfielder Kyle Keenan with two outs to be the eventual game-deciding run.

The other three runs for the Mountain Lions came during a three-run first inning as Satcher tallied an RBI single with two outs before Keenan drove in his first two runs of the day with a double.

Five of the six runs scored by Concord in game one were with two outs.

Sophomore pitcher Andrew Neff (1-2) settled into the game as he posted four straight scoreless innings to toss his second straight complete game. Neff struck out 10 and only walked one as he was charged with five runs over seven innings.

After the third, he only allowed two runners into scoring position for the rest of the game.

Keenan and Satcher both had two hits with the pair combining for five RBI.

Game 2: Concord 21 – Kutztown 2
The momentum from come-from-behind win in game one carried over to the first inning of game two as CU scored 11 times in the first.

Concord sent 15 batters to the plate in the opening frame. Included in the scoring was a three-run home run by Satcher, back-to-back run-scoring hits by sophomore outfielder D.J. Christian and freshman pitcher/infielder MJ Hunter and a fourth RBI of the inning from Satcher on a sacrifice fly.

The Mountain Lions added five more runs in the fourth inning as Adkins shot a double into the left center field gap and Satcher followed with his own two-base hit for part of the scoring.

CU got a second home run in the contest from junior infielder Juan Fortique as he curled a two-run homer down the left field line in the fifth to conclude the scoring.

The Maroon and Gray pounded out 22 hits in the contest. Stehlin paced the effort with four. Adkins, Hunter, sophomore infielder Zack Saryelin and Satcher all had three hits with Hunter and Saryeldin both collecting two doubles. Christian added two hits.

The 21 runs were the most for Concord since scoring 25 at Ohio Valley in April 2019. Saturday also marked the second straight year that CU has scored 10 or more runs in the first inning after plating 10 runs at West Virginia Wesleyan last season.

Sophomore pitcher Eddie Blake surrendered two solo home run in the game for the only two earned run he allowed. Blake (2-0) scattered six hits and notched a career-high eight strikeouts over six innings.

The teams will play a single nine-inning game 12:00 p.m. Sunday.
