ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Kutztown Sunday afternoon with a 17-7 win at Anderson Field in a non-conference contest.
The Mountain Lions (6-3-1) were able to erase a 6-4 deficit in the fourth inning with six runs as it never looked back.
CU faced deficits of 3-0, 5-2 and 6-4 before scoring 11 unanswered runs.
Down a pair to start the fourth, the rally began with an opposite field double by freshman pitcher/infielder
MJ Hunter before he scored on sophomore outfielder
D.J. Christian's single. With two outs, Concord turned up the heat on Kutztown (4-9).
Sophomore catcher/infielder
Chris Satcher lined a double into left center field to score two before he came around on a double from junior outfielder
Kyle Keenan. The two-out rally continued as freshman catcher
Joey Duffer dropped a single into center field to score sophomore infielder
Michael Dupont and Keenan.
Now protecting a four-run advantage, Concord piled on five runs in the fifth. Duffer and Keenan were right in the middle of the action again. Keenan sent a double to deep center field to score two with the bases loaded and Duffer followed as he golfed a single into right field to plate Dupont and Keenan.
Dupont put a cap on the scoring with his first home run of the season, a deep two-run shot out to left field in the seventh that also scored Satcher.
The Mountain Lions scored two runs in each of the first two innings to keep pace with KU. Dupont and Satcher each had an RBI in the first while Dupont's two-run single got Concord to within 5-4 of the Bears in the second.
Freshman pitcher/infielder
Rylee Nicholas (2-0) was stellar out of the bullpen as he tossed 5.1 innings, allowing just one run on one hit to go with two strikeouts. He retired the side in order three different times in his relief work.
CU pounded out 16 hits on the afternoon. Eight of the nine starters for Concord had at least one hit and eight of the nine starters touched home plate at least once.
The 4-7 hitters of Satcher, Dupont, Keenan and Duffer were a combined 11-for-17 with 16 RBI and five extra-base hits. Dupont finished with six RBI and Duffer added four RBI.
The Mountain Lions travel to Salem 12:00 p.m. Friday for a doubleheader against the Tigers.
