RECORDS
CU is 13-6-1 overall after a doubleheader split at UVa.-Wise Wednesday, and sports a 3-1 MEC mark.
Alderson Broaddus is looking for win number one of the season at 0-15 and 0-4 versus the MEC.
NDC comes into action this weekend with a record of 6-13 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
HITTERS HIT
The Mountain Lions banged out 31 hits across two games at UVa.-Wise as they tallied 14 hits in a narrow 10-9 loss in game one before 17 more hits in game two, a 14-11 victory. Concord is 10
th in Division II in batting average this season, .342. Individually, sophomore catcher/infielder
Chris Satcher is seventh in the MEC in average (.415) while sophomore infielder
Zack Saryeldin is eighth (.412). Freshman catcher
Joey Duffer enters the weekend with multiple hits in three straight games as he has raised his average to .379. And fifth-year senior infielder
Anthony Stehlin has raised his average from .267 to .304 over the last week as he has batted 8-for-19 in his last five games with nine RBI. CU's slugging percentage of .475 for the season is second in the MEC behind Frostburg State.
APPROACHING THE RECORD
By his team winning a game at UVa.-Wise on Wednesday, head coach
Kevin Garrett is one win away from 500 for his career. The 22
nd-year head coach is 499-371-2 in his career. He is vying to become the sixth coach in the Atlantic Region and only coach in the MEC with 500 or more wins. The other five coaches in the MEC South Division have combined to win only 474 career games. The next closest coach to Coach Garrett's 499 career wins in the conference is Notre Dame's Len Barker who has piled up 206 wins since taking over the NDC program in 2012. With his next save, Stehlin will break the program's career saves record with his 12
th. Stehlin tied the mark last week at Emory & Henry. One of Stehlin's career saves came in the MEC Tournament last season against Alderson Broaddus as CU eliminated the Battlers 8-6.
MUCH DIFFERENT LOOK
Last season, the Mountain Lions dropped all four games to Alderson Broaddus and Notre Dame as Concord was held to one run at Notre Dame and lost 8-3 and 7-1 to AB at Epling Stadium in Beckley, West Virginia. However, it was before sophomore pitchers
Eddie Blake and
Andrew Neff were inserted into the starting rotation. And CU was dealing with a myriad of injuries at the end of March last season. Sophomore infielder
Michael Dupont was 3-for-7 against AB in the regular season last year. Concord did get revenge on the Battlers in the MEC Tournament with the two-run win. Saryeldin had two hits at the top of the lineup, and Blake had a then-career best six strikeouts over 6.1 innings. Meanwhile, Neff enters the weekend looking for his fifth straight start of at least seven innings and six strikeouts.
ALDERSON BROADDUS AT A GLANCE
After leading Alderson Broaddus to the MEC Tournament last season, former head coach Matt Yurish is now at Fairmont State in the same role. Zac Mishler's Battlers came close to a win last weekend as it pushed West Virginia State in losses, 9-5 and 16-10. Veteran infielder Joey Alcorn is batting .308 with seven RBI. Will Knight, who got the start for AB against Concord in the MEC Tournament, has 12 strikeouts in 18 innings. Cameron Sheets has hit three home runs despite batting just .195.
NOTRE DAME AT A GLANCE
Shortstop Ben Ross was an All-MEC Second Team selection last season behind Stehlin even though he batted over .400. This season, Ross is second in the MEC in slugging percentage (.848). Ross is batting .379 to go with six home runs and 18 RBI. Nick Farrell is adding three home runs and 14 RBI. Austin Mora has racked up 34 strikeouts in 35 innings on the mound, and opponents are hitting just .229. Last season, Mora had 12 strikeouts in a complete game against CU.
