Concord Plays Davis & Elkins, West Virginia Wesleyan

Athens, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team prepares to play two Mountain East Conference doubleheaders this weekend at the CU Softball Field.
The Mountain Lions play two against Davis and Elkins Friday at 2:00 p.m. and West Virginia Wesleyan Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

RECORDS
Concord is 6-16 overall and 0-4 against MEC opponents.
Davis & Elkins is 4-17 overall and 2-2 against MEC foes.
West Virginia Wesleyan has an overall record of 11-8-1 and 2-2 in conference games.

BASE THIEVES
In their last three games, the Mountain Lions have stolen seven bases on seven attempts. Senior pitcher/outfielder Laura Thompson holds the team lead in steals with nine so far this season. Against West Virginia State, freshman second baseman/outfielder Aubrey Matice stole a base in game one and swiped two bags in game two. With 29 steals in 34 attempts, CU ranks third in the Mountain East Conference in stolen bases. Individually, Thompson is ranked third in the MEC in stolen bases. Freshman third baseman Kylee Stacy is also ranked in the top five in the MEC in stolen bases with eight.

CLIMBING THE RECORD BOOKS
With six hits in her last three games, Thompson has moved into seventh in program history in career hits with 161. She scored three runs last weekend to place her fourth in program history in career runs scored with 130. Thompson also has sole possession of second in program history in career triples with 12, passing Antonette Mazzella (1997-00) and Kristen Rose (2014-16). Against Charleston in game two, Thompson hit 4-for-4 with a double, one run scored, and one walk.

ON A ROLL
Last season, the Mountain Lions won both of their games against West Virginia Wesleyan, while also completing a four-game season sweep of D&E. Game one against WVWC resulted in a 2-1 CU win that lasted nine innings. Senior third baseman/outfielder Sarah Thompson batted 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI in the game.

In four games against Davis & Elkins, S. Thompson batted 9-for-16 (.563) with two doubles, one home run, and seven RBI. Five of those RBI came in the 11-3 victory over the Senators. In the 12-3 CU win, junior catcher/outfielder Jolie Privett was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with a double, home run, and four RBI, tying the single-game program record for hits. CU's final two home games of the 2021 season were 9-0 and 5-3 wins over Davis & Elkins.
 
DAVIS & ELKINS AT A GLANCE
Concord holds the series advantage against D&E, 22-14. CU has not lost a game to Davis & Elkins since April 2011. Freshman Linzey Allard leads the team in batting average (.275), slugging percentage (.412), doubles (four), and RBI (seven). Allard is also tied for the team lead in home runs with one. In the circle, D&E has a team ERA of 7.97. Pitcher Haley Grindstaff has tossed 23 strikeouts in 28.2 innings.
WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN
As a team, the Bobcats are hitting .315 with a .438 slugging percentage. Outfielder Grace Hightower has a .421 batting average, which is a team high. Taylor Swartz is the team leader in slugging (.631), home runs (five), and RBI (20). Pitcher Hannah Hudson sports a 1.63 ERA, striking out 74 batters and allowing 15 earned runs in 64.1 innings pitched. WVWC has a 2.50 team ERA.
