ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team fell to West Virginia State in both games of its Mountain East Conference doubleheader held at CU Softball Field.
Game 1: West Virginia State 9 – Concord 1
West Virginia State (7-9, 4-0 MEC) used four runs in the fifth inning and two runs in the sixth to push past CU (6-16, 0-4 MEC) in the ballgame.
Down 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, senior pitcher/outfielder
Laura Thompson singled to lead off the inning. Thompson stole second and made her way to third on a groundout. The next batter, junior catcher/outfielder
Jolie Privett singled to left field to score Thompson and make it a 3-1 ballgame.
Offensively, Thompson batted 1-for-2 with a run scored.
Freshman pitcher/infielder
Rachael Koller (3-7) was the losing pitcher. Koller tallied two strikeouts in 3.2 innings.
Game 2: West Virginia State 4 – Concord 3
Concord put together two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to get within one run of WVSU, but the comeback fell short.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Privett led off the inning with a double to left field and advanced to third on a passed ball. Freshman shortstop/utility
Courtney Raines singled through the right side of the infield to score Privett and make the score 2-1.
With runs coming in the top of the fifth and sixth innings, West Virginia State held a 4-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.
Freshman second baseman/outfielder
Aubrey Matice drew a one-out walk. Matice worked her way around the bases by swiping second on a steal and advancing to third on a groundout. The next batter, Thompson tripled down the right field line to plate Matice and bring the tying run to the plate with two outs in a 4-2 game. Thompson raced in on an error to make the score 4-3, but WVSU managed to close out the game.
Privett was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Both Raines and Thompson tallied one RBI each.
Freshman pitcher/first baseman
Caitlyn Bauer (3-7) was handed the loss. Bauer pitched all seven innings, striking out five batters and allowing three earned runs.
The Mountain Lions prepare for a mid-week home doubleheader against Bluefield State Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
