FIRST IMPRESSIONS
The freshman pitching duo of
Jacob Nester and
Rylee Nicholas helped the Mountain Lions pick up a game three win in the series. Nester tossed six innings as he tallied the most strikeouts on the weekend for any Concord pitcher with five. He did not factor in the decision, but Nicholas quieted the hot bats of UPJ by tossing three innings and allowing just one run to pick up his first career victory. In three innings, Nicholas faced just two over the minimum as he retired the Mountain Cats in order in the ninth to secure the win. The battery for Nester and Nicholas was freshman catcher
Joey Duffer who collected two doubles at the bottom of the order. Duffer is the first CU freshman with two doubles in the same game since Jordan Clark in 2016.
RENEWING THE RIVALRY
Concord and Bluefield State face each other for the first time since the 2019 season when the Mountain Lions won both games. CU cruised to a 15-2 victory at home April 12. However, 18 days later Concord scored six of the final eight runs in the game to rally past BSC 14-13. The Maroon and Gray stacked up 35 hits across the two games. Junior outfielder
Josh Adkins and Stehlin are the only two Concord position players to appear against Bluefield State in their career. Senior pitcher
Gabe Garcia played in the road game at Bluefield State three seasons ago.
