Concord Resumes Play with Four Games at Bearcat/Fleet Invite

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team travels to South Carolina to play two doubleheaders in the Bearcat/Fleet Invite hosted by Erskine and Lander. Friday, CU plays Georgia Southwestern at 8:00 a.m. and Carson-Newman at 10:30 a.m. On Saturday, Concord faces Coker at 10:30 a.m. and Lander at 6:00 p.m.

RECORDS
The Mountain Lions have a 2-4 record entering the Bearcat/Fleet Invite.

Georgia Southwestern holds a 7-3 record and is currently on a seven-game win streak

Carson-Newman has a 13-3 after winning 3-of-4 in the Eagle Invitational.

Coker is 9-7 and has won five of their last six games.

Lander is currently 13-1, coming off a sweep against Chowan and South Carolina Beaufort in the Bearcat Round Robin.

FRESH ARMS
In each of the last five games, CU has started a freshman pitcher. Freshman pitcher/infielder Rachael Koller has started her college career sporting a 1.62 ERA, while recording nine strikeouts, and giving up two earned runs in 8.2 innings pitched. In the Newberry Round Robin Weekend Tournament, Koller earned her first career win against Chowan, giving up one earned run and striking out nine batters.

Freshman pitcher/first baseman Caitlyn Bauer earned her first career win in her first career start against Chowan on the second day of the Newberry Round Robin Weekend Tournament. In Bauer's second appearance in the pitching circle, she struck out nine and gave up one earned run on 124 pitches to earn the win.
Bauer's record on the rubber is 1-1 after the loss to Tusculum where she struck out five batters and gave up two earned runs in six innings pitched.

AT THE PLATE
Senior third baseman/outfielder Sarah Thompson and freshman utility player Delaney Fulk lead CU in batting average, hits, and doubles. Fulk has a team-leading batting average of .438 with seven hits and two doubles. Thompson averages .421 at the plate and leads the team in hits with eight. Thompson also leads the team in RBI with seven and home runs with one.

Fulk made her collegiate debut against Chowan where she batted 3-for-3 with one double and one RBI. The Lowgap, North Carolina native has gotten at least one hit in every game since.

Thompson started the season hot in the Newberry Round Robin Weekend Tournament, batting 3-for-3, driving in three RBI, and finishing a triple shy of the cycle against Chowan. Thompson also hit 2-for-3 against Newberry, plating four RBI.
 
TOURNAMENT HISTORY
CU has played in the Bearcat/Fleet Invite twice previously, playing five games during the 2019 season and six games during the 2020 campaign. In 2019, CU dropped both their series against Lander and Erskine. The Mountain Lions managed to leave with a win against Claflin, 6-5.

In 2020, the Mountain Lions split their series against King and Erskine. CU also beat Belmont Abbey and tied Lander before heading back to Athens.

THE FIELD AT A GLANCE
Georgia Southwestern started their 2022 campaign dropping their first three games to Embry-Riddle and Florida Southern (twice). Since then, GSW has gone on a seven-game win streak, outscoring their opponents 60-15 during the stretch. Junior infielder Katelyn Wood leads the team in batting average, hitting .500 with 17 hits, 13 RBI, 10 runs scored, six doubles, and two home runs in 34 at-bats.

Carson-Newman have won eight of their last nine games. Senior infielder Leah Sohm is hitting .508 with 30 hits, 11 RBI, 24 runs scored, three triples, and two home runs. Fifth-year senior pitcher Sara King sports a 7-1 record and 2.09 ERA on the rubber. King has struck out 36 batters and allowed 15 earned runs in 50.1 innings pitched. Carson-Newman as a team is batting .371, which is the 14th highest team batting average in Division II

Coker has won five of its last six games. In their last three games, the Cobras have outscored their opponents 42-1. Senior infielder Chloe Pelham is batting .491 with 26 hits, 18 RBI, eight doubles, two triples, and three home runs.

The Bearcats are one of the best fielding teams in the nation with a fielding percentage of .985, which is tied for fourth in Division two. Lander has committed only SIX errors in the 14 games they have played. Junior utility player Shannon Antonini leads Lander in batting average (.450), hits (18), and RBI (18). Pitchers Reagan More and Liz Gollin are a combined 8-1 in the pitching circle so far this season.
