GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The Concord University softball team lost a doubleheader to Tusculum, 6-0 and 5-1, at Red Edmonds Field Friday afternoon in two non-conference games.
CU drops to 2-4 while Tusculum improves to 4-2.
Game 1: Tusculum 6 – Concord 0
Tusculum was able to break the game open with three runs in the fourth inning as it took the opener of the doubleheader.
The Mountain Lions loaded the bases with one out in the first inning on two singles and a walk, but a strikeout and a flyout to left field ended the scoring threat for CU.
TU tallied two unearned runs in the second inning and added a third run in the bottom of the third. The Pioneers took control of the game with three runs in the fourth.
Concord was sat down in order in its final three at-bats. Tusculum's Emily Sappington held the Mountain Lions to three hits.
Senior catcher/utility
Mikayah Pulliam was 1-for-2 at the plate with a walk.
Freshman pitcher/first baseman Cailtyn Bauer (1-1) went the distance for Concord as she scattered seven hits and only had two earned runs against her in six innings. Bauer recorded three strikeouts.
Game 2: Tusculum 5 – Concord 1
A late rally by the Mountain Lions wasn't enough as the Pioneers held off CU in the nightcap.
Tusculum led 3-0 through four innings.
Concord pushed across a run in the top of fifth. Senior third baseman/outfielder
Sarah Thompson led off the frame with a single. After being pushed to second, Thompson came around to score on freshman pitcher/infielder
Rachael Koller's two-out single down the right field line. Tusculum answered with a score in the bottom of the frame.
CU again rallied in the top of the sixth. Bauer and freshman second baseman/outfielder
Aubrey Matice strung together back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. A sacrifice bunt pushed a pair of runners into scoring position, however, the Pioneers were able to escape the jam with a double play. And a 1-2-3 seventh ended the game.
The Mountain Lions had nine hits in the nightcap, but left 10 runners on base.
Matice was 2-for-2 with a walk. Just like game one, Pulliam reached base twice with a hit and a walk in the second game.
Koller (1-2) was charged with the loss, allowing four earned runs and striking out three in six innings.
Concord's next game is February 25 as part of the Bearcat/Fleet Invite hosted by Erskine and Lander February 25.
